US accused of trying to block abortion pills
The US government is trying to block the World Health Organisation from endorsing two abortion pills which could save the lives of some of the 68,000 women who die from unsafe practices in poor countries every year.

The WHO wants to put the pills on its essential medicines list, which constitutes official advice to all governments on the basic drugs their doctors should have available.

Last month, an expert committee met to consider a number of new drugs for inclusion on the list. They approved for the first time two pills, to be used in combination for the termination of early pregnancy, called mifepristone and misoprostol. In poor countries where abortion is legal, doctors currently have no alternative to surgery.

The Guardian understands that the US department of health and human services has been lobbying the director general's office at the WHO to block approval of the pills, in line with President George Bush's neoconservative stance on abortion.

1. When or when will the world recognize that for all of its hypocritical
palaver about compassion and caring for families, the US, under the present administration, cares nothing about women, except as child reproductive units.

12. Well said. And none of us must let down our guard...
...in the months ahead as our own party's accommodationist sect tells us to start muffling our support of those rights.

If you believe in a reproductive freedom, speak out, and speak out loud!

2. Abortion Pills are Bad' Mkay?
:sarcasm: alert - Why should we let people have abortions, they should be illegal because our president and the church say so, they agree. Who cares if you're not part of the church! You sohuld be, the world has to become like the church! :sarcasm: ended.

THis is just a sad article but not a surprise when one considers the leadership we have right now.

16. They would say these women deserve to die for having an abortion
even if trying to carry the pregnancy to term would kill them. Women dying from babies is god's will. But other medical interventions to ensure the health and well being of people like cheney's pacemaker are OK. people dying of aids is gods wil but it is OK to treat people dying of heart disease due to eating badly, not exercising, and smoking. Amazing that only the sins realting to sex deserve death while everything else is OK. Why aren't any of these groups preaching against abortion, birthcontrol and emergency contraception also preaching against greed, gluttony, coveting one's neighbor's fancy car, etc. Why were they attacking stores for saying Season's Greetings instead of pointing out that one does not worship by maxing out your credit cards? blech

10. You're seeing right wing theocracy
There will be no contraception, there will be no abortion, and there will be no women's rights. Like I said, under the guise of religion, the corporate globalists want these poor babies born to work at slave wages to increase global corporate profits. Mr. Bush is the king of global profiteers. Robertson and Falwell don't own shares in diamond mines in South Africa for nothing and the Bush family has been aligned with Saudis for decades.

11. Yawn....tell me something important- who's left on American Idol???

What's new with the "Women of Wisteria Lane?"

What percentage of the US population knows or cares about any of this? What percentage thinks it's morally OK to deprive poor, African woman of their lives so we don't encourage sex? It is depressing as all hell, but I'm not at all surprised. Embarrassed? sure, depressed, sure. Surprised? Not in the least. And it doesn't surprise me that they sleep soundly because they are sociopaths.

15. Do these pills actually cause an "abortion" to take place...
or is there a more accurate way of describing this? One of my fundie friends brought this up a while back and I didn't have anything to argue with.

19. They prevent implantation
I believe that's the issue they're hiding behind, in terms of emergency contraception. However, as for BCP proper, the issue (whether the Christo-facists admit it or not) is that The Pill allows women to control their own fertility, rather than keeping them at home with a babe at the tit and one in the belly.

However, you can always throw back to your friends that God is the world's biggest abortionist, since a huuuge percentage (like 80 or 90 percent) of pregnancies miscarry in the first three months.
