Moore sets up scholarship for rebels

SAN MARCOS, CA (AP) -- Filmmaker and Michigan native Michael Moore has established a scholarship for students who defy the administration at California State University, San Marcos - the same school that canceled his talk last year.

The Michael Moore Freedom of Speech Scholarship will award two $2,500 annual scholarships to Cal State San Marcos students "who have done the most to fight for issues of student rights by standing up to the administration," according to a news release issued Wednesday.

The first scholarships will be awarded in the 2005-2006 academic year. Winners will be announced in June.

Cal State San Marcos President Karen Hynes revoked Moore's invitation to speak on campus last fall because she said the school was prohibited from spending state money on partisan political activity. Hynes said she did not believe there would be enough time to find a speaker whose opinions could balance Moore's liberal views.

2. I love this idea on several levels.
Really, this makes life a little less stressful for the sort of person who never has it easy otherwise.

Wow.

3. Paying students to rebel?
They do it for free! Isn't that just expected behavior for students? I wouldn't think monetary encouragement would be necessary.

4. Still is nice to get some cash sor doing what's right than paying for it
yourself. I've spent thousands on organizing, I would love to get paid for it.

5. They cancelled it on CAMPUS.
Edited on Thu Apr-21-05 03:04 PM by Maat
I was there and so thoroughly enjoyed myself. What happened is that the kids got some help from a sponsor, and we had the talk at the Del Mar Racetrack.

MM likes to joke that instead of him talking to 1,100 people, he talked to over 11,000 (or something like that).

We had a great meetup. Joan Baez was there and sang, and the brother of a soldier killed in Iraq spoke.

The best part was when we were driving in to park, and I got to ... uhmmm... salute one of the Rethuglican/conservative protesters.

This 46-year-ol' ma had a great time!

He announced the fund set-up then.

I made a family friend, 18-year-old student at San Marcos U, be the first in line on the day the tickets started to sell. She got me a ticket, and I was joyous. MM does a great speech!

6. This is how the right wing works - punish everyone who takes you on
Edited on Thu Apr-21-05 05:12 PM by Democat
This is how Democrats should be. When someone attacks you, make them pay - punish them back 10x what they did to you.

If Democrats had gone on the offensive everytime a Republican attacked them over the last ten years, we would be the ones in charge of the government instead of them.

You can't win if you don't fight.

9. Michael Moore sets up 'hellraiser' scholarship
Jimmy Leach
Friday April 22, 2005

The filmmaker Michael Moore has established a scholarship for students who defy the administration at California State University - the same institution that cancelled his talk last year.

Moore, who directed the anti-George Bush polemic Fahrenheit 9/11, has set up the Michael Moore Freedom of Speech Scholarship, which will award two $2,500 (£1,300) annual scholarships to students at CSU "who have done the most to fight for issues of student rights by standing up to the administration".

The first scholarships will be awarded in the 2005-2006 academic year. Winners will be announced in June.

Moore was barred from a speaking engagement at the university last October, when university authorities said there was not enough time to arrange for a speaker from the opposite side of the political spectrum.
