Criswell's speech called 'inappropriate' (media="tools of Satan")
http://www.zwire.com/site/news.cfm?newsid=14382264&BRD=1426&PAG=461&dept_id=528208&rfi=6

Tuesday's Volunteer Center of Collin County lunch was not the appropriate place for former longtime local TV news anchor John Criswell to make statements about personal religious beliefs, the center's executive director said.

Criswell's speech also linked the news media to Satan. Until the media stops portraying people of faith as "crackpots and dangerous zealots no different from fanatics who flew airplanes into the World Trade Center...the fight is not over," he said

Referring to an earlier linguistic comment that listeners infer, but speakers imply, he added, "Did I just infer that some in the media in America are acting as the tools of Satan? No. Remember, you infer, I imply," he said.

Criswell said only one person approached him stating that his speech was offensive to her faith. "I, of course asked, if her indignation is limited to Christian speakers or she would also complain if the speaker had been open about being Catholic, Jewish, Muslim or atheist," he said in an e-mail. "It was not a pretty moment, but I made my point. It seems these days it is perfectly fine to be anything except openly Christian, and in fact very much in vogue to attack Christians. What a shame that "tolerance" can be so selective."

31. !?!?! Novelization ?!?!?
Oh man, I'll bet that's a scream. That was one of the best movies I ever saw. Criswell is almost falling down drunk and may have gotten into some of Bela's leftover stash for all I know. An Ed Wood Classic!

In other Criswell-related stuff, anyone here ever hear Mae West singing "Criswell Predicts"? It was on an LP she put out in the 60s.

32. I love how he squints to read the cue cards
The West song is hilarious, they were great pals apparently...

some years back I directed a flick based on one of his other novels, complete with Cris-clone... I took the Criswell dialogue from a lot of his insane books and newspaper columns to get that authentic dementia:

3. As long as crackpots and dangerous zealots
pretend to be people of faith, I'll get upset-but not at the media, at them. And yes, if a Muslim or Jew or other non-Christian had a hate-filled speech, I would call them on it-call them to go back and read the teachings of their faith.

"Until the media stops portraying people of faith as "crackpots and dangerous zealots no different from fanatics who flew airplanes into the World Trade Center...the fight is not over," How about I compare them to people who blow up abortion clinics? Or maybe I should compare them to the guys that shot a muslim friend of mine in the head after 9/11 cuz she wore a scarf.

25. John Criswell
Was a local news anchor in the Dallas/Ft. Worth area. This qualifies him as the flimsiest of local celebrities in this area (mostly in his own mind.)

As a talking head he had no outstanding qualities outside the obligatory great head of hair.

Say, aren't Catholics and Protestants two part of the Christian family? He's putting Catholics in some non-Christian category here. I love it when the weasels start to feed on one another.

So he excludes Catholics from Christianity, do I read that correctly?

27. He made his speech in neocon-ville, TX
Collin County...the same county where Sam Johnson made his "I'm going over to nuke Syria" joke <yeah, sure> at a local church get- together..for some reason the hateful neocons feel more than comfortable running their mouths here, thinking that EVERYone is going to sit back and applaude, nodding in agreement.

So what should have been a uplifting, feel good, thank the community volunteers event was turned into a "my God is better then your God/Allah/etc.." conference.

Seeing as how the Catholic population is an ever growing group in this county, is it any wonder things hit the fan..a HUGE John Paul II private Catholic school is due to open in the fall..it holds 1200 kids. PLUS people from all walks of life volunteer, so overall he was not very bright in giving his hatefest speech.

I know this guy is not known outside the metroplex, but I posted the incident here because WHAT he said to a large community gathering made my head spin andn ot b/c of WHO he is..and it seemed right in step w/ what is happening on a national level with hateful right wing bastards...

19. Seems to me a LTTE on this one point would be helpful
That he considers Catholics to be nonChristian and lumps with atheists. WE know they do this (do not consider Catholics as Christian) but many people, including many Catholics do not. And if you do you should and mention the church he belongs to. Maybe some enterprising reporter will call the minister for a comment.

28. Criswell told almost 600 attendees, "I believe
the Bible is the inspired word of God, every word of it."

I'm a Christian myself, but I don't believe 'every word' in the Bible was inspired by God... considering the fact that a repressive church and The Holy Roman Empire single-handedly had too much power over the Bible for at least 1500 years!

I think Criswell needs to study some history.

People like him scare me. They are a direct threat to our country, to MY religion and to our welfare.
