Dean widens cash advantage

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution

WASHINGTON -- Howard Dean's energized, Internet-driven campaign left his competitors further in the dust Tuesday as the race for cash in the Democratic presidential race ended its third quarter.

The former Vermont governor, once considered a long shot, told supporters, "You have the power," in an early evening e-mail as his Web site showed the campaign closing in on its goal of collecting $15 million before the midnight deadline.

'Time running short'

Michael J. Malbin, executive director of the Campaign Finance Institute and a political scientist at the State University of New York at Albany, said the results so far show that only Dean has established himself as a serious candidate who can broaden his base.

He said that he would be studying the campaign's actual reports later this month to see if any of the other candidates can break through that barrier. "It's conceivable," he said. "But time is running short" before the whirlwind primary season that begins in January.

1. Things are heating up
on the primary stage. There are some I hope do not drop out soon because we need their voices too.

I am delighted to see so much money being raised in small bits, gives one hope maybe all is not lost to the big corporations.

2. They are going to have to drop out eventually
Might as well be now, especially with Graham. No one really believes that he has a chance at the nomination, and his Senate seat could very well go Republican if he doesn't run for reelection.

3. I wonder if
everyone will be saying Dean has peaked too early, like they said at the end of the last quarter. I bet LOTS of people are scared that he hasn't peaked YET!

I can't wait until the final fundraising numbers from Q3 are tallied, and we can separate the men from the boys.

4. Kerry met his goal
Edited on Wed Oct-01-03 02:28 PM by Nicholas_J
Of raising one million in a few days online.

The figures from his campaign are being kept quiet, for the time being.

Raising money is not the only ticket. recent polls have show Deans support falling, in NEw Hampshire ,even though his is still ahead, adn falling by a large percentage of his one month lead.

5. Dean and Kerry both might...
bypass federal financing for the primaries.
