GUATEMALA CITY, April 22 (Reuters) - Army troops and police patrolled the streets of Belize's main city on Friday after one person died during anti-government protests and looting, government officials said.

More than 100 people have been arrested since demonstrations broke out in Belize City last week at the government's handling of the sale of the state-run Belize Telecommunications Limited, or BTL, phone company. <snip>

8. You wouldn't want to live in Belize City.
Rather dangerous place. San Pedro Island is a different story.

5. For you folks that have never been to Belize
When I visited Belize City with my family, I told my kids that Belize is probably the closest thing to apartheid that you will ever see. I was shocked to see the slave colony descendant's blocked from their own port by security guards & chain-link fences. Sure there are those off-shore resorts for affluent tourists, but most Belize-ans live in a world of crime infested slums & neglect.
