Democrats agree to gentlemanly primary against DeLay
HOUSTON Democrats who want to seek the nomination against House Majority Leader Tom DeLay agreed today to a gentlemanly contest.
Two of the candidates _ Richard Morrison and former U-S Representative Nick Lampson _ said they could eventually bow out when a front-runner emerges.

Morrison captured 41 percent of the vote against DeLay in 2004. Lampson represented about a third of what is now DeLay's 22nd Congressional District and confirmed he will seek the Democratic nomination.

Morrison and Lampson say Houston City Councilman Gordon Quan told them he was putting together an exploratory committee.

Morrison and Lampson said the men met for more than an hour and agreed not to have a primary slugfest.

3. DeLay made a serious error with the redistricting plan.
By enlarging his district, DeLay gained a constituency outside his ultra right-wing Sugarland base. By expanding his feudal domain, he put his career in the hands of people who are not guaranteed to vote for him no matter what. Morrisson made a Hell of a dent last year. I think these ethics violations might make the race even closer.

By no means is it a safe race for the Dems, but Tombo is in deep shit if any more scandals surface.

5. I think Lampson might scare him more.
Lampson was an incumbent congressman when Delay's redistricting plan went through. Delay drew his own new district to take in a good portion of Lampson's district and drawing Lampson out of that portion.

Lampson, as was planned, lost to a repuke. However, the place Delay really went down was in that portion of the new 22nd that had been Lampson's in previous years. Lampson could pull the eastern portion of the 22nd, which was his before and spend his time on the western portion. Morrison wasn't that strong in the western portion of the district, so if Lampson could make a better showing there, all the better.

Personally, I think Quan is too liberal for the 22nd. If he's going to run, I'd prefer to see him run in the 7th (which is where he lives at the moment and where his wife would like to stay). He's too liberal for the 7th, too, but it's worth the chance. I don't want to see any heroic chances taken in the 22nd. I want Delay out of there, anyway we can do it. Personally, I think that would be either Morrison or Lampson. I don't know how the DCCC is reading the numbers, but politically Lampson is more liberal than Morrison, but less so than Quan.

Without a doubt, Quan is the more charming and tough campaigner and just looking locally, probably would have the most money behind him. He was at a lunch I was at Wednesday and I shamelessly pleaded with him to run in the 7th. I'll admit, since I live in the 7th it's a selfish motive.

8. Can't he be recalled
Surly there are mechanisms for a recall. Why wait.Decide who you want to run, the mount a recall petetion,
I am still ticked that not enough funding etc went to defeat DeLay this last cycle because he was vunerable. Just tap into the teacher union.

9. If he was recalled like Gray Davis....
He'd fight before they threw him in prison, the crazy cult obsessed firecracker.

Better idea to let the freeps chew on his disposed rotting corpse, until all the vigor is spilled out and then make the move....Nobody wants a Diebold machine putting somebody like Tom Ridge in DeLay's seat.
