Rove: Bolton will be confirmed; judges deserve vote

WASHINGTON — Karl Rove rejected a compromise with Senate Democrats Monday on long-stalled nominations for the federal judiciary and strongly defended President Bush's choice of John Bolton to be ambassador to the United Nations. (Audio: Rove speaks out)

In an hour-long interview with USA TODAY and Gannett News Service reporters and editors, Rove, deputy White House chief of staff, dismissed suggestions from Democrats that they might drop threats to use filibusters to prevent votes on Bush's judicial nominees if the president would withdraw a few of the most controversial names.

"I think that would be a worthwhile compromise," Sen. Robert Byrd, D-W.Va., said Monday. "We're willing to talk about a way of ending this impasse," said Senate Minority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev.

Bush wants votes on seven federal judge nominees who were blocked in the last session of Congress. The filibuster allows 41 senators to block action on the Senate floor. Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist, R-Tenn., has said he's prepared to change the rules to ban filibusters against judicial nominees. Such a tactic would alter Senate tradition and could bring Senate business to a halt. Reid and other Democrats have threatened to retaliate by slowing or blocking all but the most vital legislation.

If it's really true that ROVE is the one that rejected this legislative compromise, that is surely a breach of law. He is a dirty-tricks slimeball with no legal authority over such things at all.

Don't take the title too literally.

Just yesterday afternoon Rush said..No Compromises or it would set a dangerous precedent for the Republicans for the future. And lo and behold, hours later "Rove rejects.." a compromise.

This has happened on more than one occassion. Rush says something, the Repubs follow suit the next day or the very same.

Rove tells Rush what to say, then Rush tells his listeners what to think.

I think the truth is somewhere in between. I have read this elsewhere too.

Rove comes up with an idea..tells Rush what to say. Rush blares into his Golden EIB mike the same day and prepares his listeners.

Rove takes the step, and the following day Rush tells his audience..'see I told you so'.

WTF does he think he is?

"Senior Adviser to the President" isn't a Cabinet position or even something like White House Chief of Staff. There is no accountability there whatsoever.

For that matter, Bush** could've picked Guckert or Gannon or whatever he's calling himself this week. And who's to say he won't someday?

I have been thinking this for a while. If they go with the nuclear option on filibusters it means they truly know/believe that they have control of the Electronic Voting Technology. They can't possibly be contemplating this unless they are 99.44% certain they will never again lose control of the Senate.

Now, the Dems can say they tried to work something out and the Republicans refused to be reasonable. When Frist goes on with the nuclear option and the Dems stall the Senate, they have this to back them up.

This is why the Repukes will continue domination. Most people think you are a Kook if you claim the '04 elections were rigged.

In general, they see Repukes doing what 51% of the country elected them to do. (sorry, these people are casual voters who go to the polls on election night then try to forget about politics.) I've heard more than one person ask what I would expect a party that controls both houses of congress and the presidency to do. Their answer is that they would expect that party to implement the policies they were advocating during the campaign.

One conservative (libertarian) told me that if the people of the country did not want republicans to implement these things, at least one of the houses of congress, or the presidency would be controlled by Dems.

I predict it will take another * war, a depression, or the overturn of Roe Vs Wade for the masses to awaken. America has to take a hit in the wallet or see how they are effected on a personal level before they act. For that reason, I think only rising gas prices are something that the American public is paying attention to. If prices go down for any reason, they will say the economy is doing better. People are so easily led around by those in office due to their apathy.

and for once, I think the Democrats are willing to slip on the brass knuckles.
