Preliminary Hearing Set for Marine Charged in Iraqi Deaths; He Claims Self-Defense

RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) - A former Wall Street trader who rejoined the Marines after the Sept. 11 attacks is now faced with the consequences of another choice - the split-second decision he made in a combat zone.

Defense attorneys for 2nd Lt. Ilario Pantano and military prosecutors agree that the Marine shot and killed two Iraqis last year in a search for a terrorist hideout. But they do not agree on circumstances surrounding the shootings. snip

According to charges, Pantano ordered other troops to remove the suspects' handcuffs and look away, then shot the pair in the back, vandalized their vehicle and hung a sign over their corpses bearing a Marine slogan: "No better friend, no worse enemy."

In a statement, Pantano told investigators the two men had their backs to him and continued talking to each other despite warnings to be quiet.

2. WTF?
"split-second decision he made in a combat zone"

Split second? Sounds more like cold pre-meditated murder to me.

3. .......man does this guy stink to high heaven.
And when he beats this raps, about five thousand more terrorist will emerge on the scene. In the name of Democracy

Rep. Walter Jones, a Republican, has said Pantano was doing nothing more than "defending the cause of freedom, democracy and liberty in his actions."

How can any human being believe that Walter Jones stands for humanity? He is a bigger piece of shit than Pantano.

4. and he will beat this rap
the talk radio haters are beating the drums ... .

Totally possible that if he did it, it was bc his mental state was crazy, after being sent into an unwinnable war and a hostile population.

But see, then convicting would mean his superiors are also
guilty; I expect to see this come out as another in a long line
of whitewashes.
