Frist angers conservatives by distancing from DeLay
Warning: WaTimes

Conservatives yesterday expressed anger at Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist for what they described as his swipe at House Majority Leader Tom DeLay.
...
Mr. Frist, Tennessee Republican, did not mention Mr. DeLay by name in a taped address to a Sunday rally of Christian conservatives, but disavowed "retaliation" against federal judges.
...
"I hope address was written by an intern, but I fear that it was written by his legal staff," said Rep. Steve King, Iowa Republican.
"What Bill Frist said shows where his heart really is -- he is not a part of our conservative movement," Rep. Patrick T. McHenry, North Carolina Republican, said in reaction to Mr. Frist's speech.
"Frist would like to have the loyalty Tom DeLay has from the conservative movement, including Christian conservatives, but he can't get it because Tom DeLay is a true conservative who came out of the movement to lead the House," Mr. McHenry said.

4. frist doesn't hate enough to satisfy the zealots
and people question posts which question the hearts of those who call themselves christians and spend every waking hour hating in the name of Jesus Christ.

It is a joy to see lil bill twisting in the vice grips. He has sold his soul to the religiously insane, he's caught in the spider web and now is attempting to wiggle. Too late bill.

9. "...he (Frist) is not a part of our conservative movement"
I think we're witnessing the start of the GOP's decline. And it couldn't happen to a better group of assholes.

15. That was inevitable
First of all, these aren't real conservatives. See post 10.

Second, they're ideologues. There are plenty of those around here, only a different ideology. Pragmatism does not enter an ideologue's thinking; facts, they think, can be derived from ideas. It is not surprising that an ideologue would express contempt for "reality-based" thinking.

Neither does the concept of compromise enter their thinking. Since the ideology answers all questions and facts are irrelevant, wisdom is confused with orthodoxy. One isn't expected to evaluate any situation scientifically; one is expected to adhere to orthodoxy at all times. To stray from orthodoxy is thoughtcrime.

To such people, the loss of heretic may seem less a disaster to such than it is. In fact, they may believe it strengthens them. This was the reaction of the right wing ideologues when Senator Jeffords bolted the Republican Party.

As mentioned earlier, this kind of thinking is not confined to the right wing. How many people here would like to see Senator Lieberman join the GOP? How would that make it easier to oppose right wing initiatives?

Another recent phenomenon is the advent of what might be called the moderate ideologue. That's almost an oxymoron, but look at Al From and Bruce Reed at NDOL.com. They think the Democrats would be better without progressives, whom they regard as heretics. Ironically, their orthodoxy masquerades as pragmatism.

10. No conservative would be bothered by someone distancing himself from DeLay
Edited on Tue Apr-26-05 10:06 AM by Jack Rabbit
On the other hand, a right wing moron might have some issues with it.

Really, conservative is the most abused word in the American political lexicon nowadays. It has been for some time. Barry Goldwater, Warren Rudman and Kevin Philips are conservatives. Jesse Helms, Tom DeLay, Bill Frist and G. W. Bush are not.

Although he might bristle to hear anyone say this, Bill Clinton has a more legitimate claim to being called a conservative than any of the right wing extremists who go under that banner today.

12. If there was ever any doubt....
it has just been erased:

"Frist would like to have the loyalty Tom DeLay has from the conservative movement, including Christian conservatives, but he can't get it because Tom DeLay is a true conservative who came out of the movement to lead the House," Mr. McHenry said.

Being a true conservative does indeed mean being totally corrupt and only out to line your own pocket through extortion, bribery, nepotism, mendacity, and outright theft. Thanks for clearing that up, Mr. McHenry!!

13. Trying to appear...presidential?
If that cat-killer runs for the top spot in 2008..and "wins"- there had better be a MAJOR revolt in this country- one of Ukrainian proportion. not even diebold could legitimize such a creepy guy as POTUS.

(sigh)...but then again- look at what they've been able to with lil'boots...twice.

maybe we should start deciding on a color for the marches now...why wait until the last minute? so...orange is right out- the Ukrainians already did that one to death...we should probably nix green as well, because of political party connotations...blue is a natural(blue states and all), but i'd like to recommend: Purple- i think that it should at least be considered- it would be a way of showing that we want to be inclusive of the red-staters, rather than just perpetuate the divisiveness...
