Republican Blasts Dems on Social Security
Republican Blasts Dems on Social Security
By GLEN JOHNSON, Associated Press Writer

Tuesday, April 26, 2005

(04-26) 13:16 PDT WASHINGTON (AP) --

The Republican head of the Senate Finance Committee lambasted Democrats and other critics of Social Security overhaul Tuesday, accusing them of offering no ideas of their own on how to keep the system from crashing.

Sen. Charles Grassley, R-Iowa, said that doing nothing will trigger at least a 28-percent cut in benefits by 2041, showing why the current Congress should work on changes to achieve "sustainable solvency."

"Those of you that are bad-mouthing every other suggestion out there, suggest your own plans," the 71-year-old part-time farmer exhorted, his voice rising. This came after a panelist at Grassley's initial hearing on the politically volatile issue of restructuring the retirement program suggested that benefit cuts and other changes triggered by creation of personal accounts would be more harmful than projected cuts under the existing structure.

"Doing nothing is not an option, because doing nothing is a cut in benefits," the senator declared. "Grandpa Grassley gets Social Security, but my granddaughter, when she retires 56 years from now, if we do nothing, is going to get this cut that you're talking about. You can rationalize it all you want to, but by golly, she's entitled to what I got, because her dad and younger people are paying for it."

Although you will never see or hear about it on any American Television channels.

7. Or...an alternative plan....
we could do nothing and then fix the problem, such as raising the caps, when the Dems are back in power. I haven't heard one Republican even attempt to address the solvency problem of social security.

9. "No ideas of their own"?????
Chuckle-head should present his party's great ideas shouldn't he? They are the majority.

How can we offer an alternative, when they haven't offered anything?

10. One option is decision making is always-Do Nothing
By that I don't mean absolutely nothing but don't change for the sake of change. The system can be fixed in several ways but totally turning it on its head is not a good idea, not that things being REALLY bad ideas have stopped Grassley's side much.

11. By 2041 we will all be dead. And won`t be able to blame Bu$h for
his war crimes or the destruction of Social Security. Ask Bob Woodward. Bu$h basically told him that. Grassley is a lying dolt whose party`s goal has been the elimination of Social Security since FDR started it. With Grassley`s repuke predecessors screaming and kicking all the way. Only a fool would believe one word coming out of that fascist`s mouth. The only work Grassley has done in his life in the Senate is steal from the poor to give to the rich. And I`m supposed to eat his crap about caring about his grandaughters retirement? Not.

Shove that in your pipe and smoke it!

And, by the way - you can eat shit and die for all I care and give your little granddaughter a middlefinger salute for me!

Dems Want to Focus on Other Savings Plans
Mon Apr 25, 4:41 PM ET
http://story.news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story&cid=512&ncid=703&e=4&u=/ap/20050425/ap_on_go_co/social_security

WASHINGTON - House Democrats, emboldened by their united opposition to President Bush's Social Security privatization proposal, are preparing to pivot soon to supporting proposals aimed on boosting personal savings outside the federal retirement program.

Among the ideas being considered, according to congressional aides speaking on the condition of anonymity, are improvements to existing retirement savings programs, such as trying to increase participation in corporate 401(k) plans by automatically enrolling workers. Under current law, workers must opt into such programs.

Another idea in a more developmental stage is a civilian version of the Thrift Savings Plan, the 401(k)-style program that federal employees can invest in on top of the contributions they make to Social Security.

If Bush's private accounts are taken off the table, the Democrats must have other savings ideas, the Democrats say.

17. what is with these people?????
Do they need a hearing aid or what????

Its the same game my ex-significant other used to use-- pretend not to hear what I said.

Absolutely infuriating.

The DEM OPTION is basically the same as it was in the days of FDR-- with some minor tweaking to adjust for longer life spans/pay out periods and to cover the (TEMPORARY) baby boom blip... which will cure itself in about 20-30 yrs time.

20. "Grandpa" Grassley's Millionaire Family Doesn't Need Social Security
"Grandpa Grassley gets Social Security, but my granddaughter, when she retires 56 years from now, if we do nothing, is going to get this cut that you're talking about. You can rationalize it all you want to, but by golly, she's entitled to what I got, because her dad and younger people are paying for it."

"Grandpa" Grassley will get a big congressional pension on top of the millions he's made in Washington as a corporate whore. Grassley's "social security" check won't amount to a piss in the ocean for him. And his granddaughter will certainly cash in on the family fortune well before she reaches retirement age. I doubt if his granddaughter will ever work for a living at the kinds of jobs most of us have.

So Grassley's speech was pure b.s.
