US consumer confidence dives
US consumer confidence dives

US consumer confidence tumbled in April to the lowest level since last November, amid deepening concerns about the outlook for jobs and income growth, a survey showed.

The Conference Board's consumer confidence index for April sank to 97.7 from 103.0 in March. The figure was worse than the average Wall Street estimate of 98.0.

The reading has now slipped for three months running, from 105.1 in January.

"Less robust conditions and a more cautious outlook have consumers feeling less confident in April than in March," said Lynn Franco, research director at the business think tank.

1. I've hardly purchased anything I didn't have to since November.
Screw it. I'm putting money away in savings.

18. We are downsizing...
selling our house in Northern VA's very hot real estate market. We are moving to very cool real estate market in Charlotte, NC. We will be able to buy with little or no mortgage with the profit from our 2.5 year old home!

3. My sales are way down this month.
I own a music store and my sales this month really suck. Both the brick and mortar store and the internet are way down. It's not just me - every store down town is hurting this month. You could shoot a cannon down main street and not hit a thing.

You gotta just love the repuke economy.

5. I learn new ways to not waste, not consume, and not spend every day.
It's actually kind of fun; I'm getting really good at it. And when I spend my money, 99.9% of the time my cash goes to a company or someone that has not supported the republicans.

I was frugal before, but I really got motivated to save money the day after Bush was re-selected. I knew without a doubt right then that the economy was going to tank.

At the end of a lot of days I think, "wow, I didn't spend any money today".

9. Congratulations, Zorra
I, too, have stopped spending and don't miss it. Thank God, I was raised in a frugal househole and know all the ways to conserve. Also know I am not helping the corporate pigs. I do feel empathy for the small business person though. I spend local and blue when I buy anything. But my income stays the same while everything else skyrockets by the week.

11. I'm watching every penny also..
I make my own breakfast and pack a lunch before leaving for work in the morning. I've stopped the $6-8 daily lunches & sandwiches, and the $4 breakfasts.

My tax return went straight into the bank account.

I guess when we get a Democrat back in office, good times might return. Until then, I'm on the Bush Budget Plan :(

15. Now that is exactly what I was thinking when opening this thread
there are tax breaks out there for everyone, or so they say.

Appears the majority in the middle class are not viewing anything as a bonus any longer and the rich do not notice the difference.

But it is not an election year, so cofidence may react as it will.

8. Bush will soon blame Americans for a recession he has been putting
of for 5 years. "If only you had agreed to SS trillions in the stock market..{the artificial market would have gone on for a few more years as private accounts allowed the middle class to loose money while the uber-elites divest of all things American) the recession would not have happened."

10. Bush is already blaming everything else for the poor economy.
Heard him on CNN last night blaming 5 or 6 other things for the problems. Says it is not HIM--NoWay. Made me laugh. This guy cannot stand it when someone puts him on the spot.

16. Remember Bush is good and all white lite! His cabal does the deeds
and then it is Turkey's fault.

I hate liars and sadistic babies. There will never be a clip of Bush taking ownership for anything (not just because he couldn't think of anything at the time).

12. Consumer confidence has been fueled by PLASTIC
the bankruptcy bill may have gotten people's attention, and they may be planning on "gettin out" while the gettin's good.

That giant sucking sound you will hear this fall, will be the sound of NO SHOPPING... The same people who use their cards like crazy for the holidays, may not HAVE any this fall ...

The flea-market/cash economy might be doing better than ever though...

and for people out here who used to spend $150 a month for commuting gasoline, we are paying $300+ now, and of course every other necessity has goe up as well.. Money only goes just so far:(

13. The "grocery ad bargain" index is down
That's my personal economic indicator. When the weekly grocery ad mailers have a lot of compelling or good bargains, the economy and consumer confidence are in the dumpster. I've never quantified it, but it seems pretty reliable, and it works much faster than those monthly reports that come out a month later. It changes week-to-week instead of only monthly too. The last couple weeks, the bargains looked better than they had for awhile.

confident we are up a creek unless something changes soon. I am a little encouraged by the recent power play by Reid. Things may be looking up politically, but economically we are a long way out.
