Bush's bouncer gets around (thugs who fake Secret Service look)

Bush's bouncer gets around
By Diane Carman
Denver Post Columnist

The White House keeps insisting that the guy impersonating a Secret Service agent who tossed the so-called Denver Three out of President Bush's Social Security road show here on March 21 was a nobody, an overzealous Republican Party volunteer, a rogue vigilante bouncer.

If that's true, this guy really gets around.

The guy was wearing a dark business suit and an earpiece. She assumed from his appearance and his demeanor that he was a Secret Service agent, but she saw no identification.

Mayer was grabbed by another Secret Service look-alike who told her, "Time to leave." She was so startled she yelled: "Take your hands off me. Don't you dare touch me."

The bouncer recoiled, she said, but continued to hustle her out of the hangar.

"They were very contemptuous," said Shea-Porter.

What we have is a big stuffed animal that only looks like a watchdog.

13. Where did you read this story?
On a roll of toilet paper? There is obviously still a press, but stuff's not going to be spoon-fed to everybody on cable news. They're too busy talking about the gospel.

about it. I'm willing to bet they condoned it 100%.

10. What is Secret Service policy on impersonators?
This is hardly the first time thugs posing as Secret Service have gotten involved in ejecting the non-enthusiastic from Bush events. This has been going on for years.

So what is their policy towards imposters? Even though on at least one occasion, they have come out and said persons in Tampa had lied about being SS agents, i do not believe the imposters were ever punished.

But -- does anyone else think that it is kinda dangerous to have people LYING about being SS agents? Who's to say it's going to be "just a republican activist", but someone actually intent on harming the president? That's what I don't understand about the demonstration of overriding protocol that we have seen over security matters....

I have seen real SS agents, and met a fake one. The real SS are scary, serious, and quiet; the fake ones are loudmouth Limbaugh types who do not seem to be so interested in the physical safety of the president but in keeping him from being "embarrassed" by a lack of unanimity of support.

Hey -- this shit is no different than Saddam being praised by sycophants, or Kim Il Jong demanding loyalty at all costs....

21. It takes years and years to train a career SS agent up to
the level of protection of the person of the President. They are career civil servants and it's not their job to 'love' their charges.. just protect them.

14. Dangerous For Real Secret Service Men Too
When they try to do their jobs they'll start getting,
"Aw, you're not a REAL Secret Service agent",
and people pushing back and getting surly.

There may also be criminals impersonating Secret Service agents,
now that it has become obvious how easy it is.
Anybody can get a black suit and an earpiece.
Presumably they would not fool the real Secret Service,
but they might victimize someone who could not tell the difference.

I presume it is still acceptable to ask the "agent" for identification.

31. absolutely right AndyT
That was the first thought that occurred to me. I can tell you that if I ever go to a repub candidate event to reconnoiter and one or two of these yahoos grabs me for no apparent reason, I'm going to remind them of where their joints and pressure points are until someone shows me a badge. What I find encouraging is that this story is in the Denver post, hardly a liberal paper.

18. I'm not sure that wearing a suit and an earpiece....
would constitute impersonating a Secret Service agent. Did they SAY that they were Secret Service? If so, they're in trouble. If not, it doesn't sound like they broke the law.

23. It would also help if our Democratic Congress would ask questions.
Press coverage reporting is important but when there is no governmental oversight we are all lost. You would think the real Secret Service would take a very dim view regarding the security risk of Secret Service impostors.

28. Dress up in a black suit, put your ear phone on, wear sun glasses.
Then stand around looking at the crowd next time an offical is in town. Walk up and direct people in the crowd. How long would you last before being frog marched to the van?

Better yet wear a security guard uniform with a billy club. Wanna bet you get arrested on the spot?

To me this sounds much more dangerous than wearing a Kerry T-Shirt, Kerry bumper sticker, or button.

26. This makes sense of a campaing incident involving bullies posing
as SS. A photographer with press credentials who happened upon a Bush rally in the same town where there was also a Kerry event was singled out by these thugs and threatened so frighteningly that he skipped both rallies and drove home half way across the country. They told him they could just make him disappear.

I am glad it was these bozos and not the real SS.

27. Gratifying
I find it quite gratifying that many who seemed asleep during the trashing of Dean by this "watchdog" are now waking up to the fact that the media is full of shit. Many during the last election just a few months ago seemed to buy into it all.

Good candidates on both sides are trashed, like McCain and Dean, and we get the half-assed versions in Bush and Kerry, neither with any idea of what ordinary Americans face.

Now, if we could only get this information out to the population in general, who still seem to believe that the media is generally liberal, and are too simple to understand that it was the media who gave them that idea in the first place.
