Mexico's attorney general steps down
By Seattle Times news services

MEXICO CITY — President Vicente Fox accepted the resignation of his attorney general yesterday and signaled a retreat from efforts to prevent Mexico City's popular leftist mayor from running for president next year.

The move, analysts said, is likely to defuse a mushrooming conflict between the Fox government and the leftist opposition that has raised concerns in the U.S. government and in international financial markets.

Attorney General Rafael Macedo de la Concha had led the charge against Mayor Andrés Manuel López Obrador, who faces a minor charge of defying a judge's order to halt construction of a hospital access road four years ago.

Despite the nature of the charges, Mexico's lower chamber of deputies stripped the mayor of his legal immunity and under Mexican law, López Obrador would be barred from running for office if a judge were to put him on trial.

1. So in other words a judge could still make Mexico explode.
Not auspicious.

3. Back to the drawing board.
I mean, you don't really think Fox and Co. will give up on
stopping Obrador, do you?

4. Right.
They have just realized their first effort to derail his candidacy has failed that's all. Their first attempt at the subversion of democracy was clumsy and ham-handed.

I'm sure they're waiting on a callback from the WH right now. As soon as Karl gets dressed and shows Gannon/Guckert out the back way, he'll be getting back to them with some better ideas.

5. Great!
Lopez Obrador has survived this round. What's next?

I fully expect massive revolt if he is prevented from running. Mexico has a long history of people taking up arms against the government. I remember farmers revolting over the govt trying to take their land for an airport not so many years ago. This is nationwide though. There could be real chaos, because their is such huge support for Lopez Obrador.

It makes me wish I was still in contact with my ex-boyfriend there! I want the scoop from a citizen!
