Police officer is convicted of fabricating drug charges

St. Louis police officer Reginald A. Williams, described by prosecutors as a "renegade cop," was convicted Thursday of making up bogus charges of crack cocaine possession against two men.

A jury in federal court in St. Louis convicted Williams of four counts - three of obstruction of justice and one of making false statements to a federal official - but acquitted him on three others.

Prosecutors said Williams, a 15-year decorated veteran cop bent on cleaning up the streets of the Walnut Park neighborhood, falsely arrested two men in August 2001 as part of a pattern of misconduct dating to 1996. snip

"A police officer who will lie to convict an innocent man is inexcusable," U.S. Attorney James Martin said in a prepared statement. He lauded the St. Louis Police Department for its cooperation.

1. But...
....did the Prosecutors get any help from other officers, or did they circle the wagons to protect one of their own, as is usually the case?

2. That would be better than Baltimore hon.
Here they get one of their Brothers in Blue to burglarize IAD and destroy the case files. Absolute power corrupts absolutely. But it's getting Worse. The news is the second Commissioner from New York that was actually restoring the departments integrity has been fired. The "good news" is he's been replaced with a home town boy. The bad news is Hommie is about to enact a paramilitary coup against the people of Baltimore. His press statements contain military terms like "troops" and "Psy-ops." Yes Mr. reagan a paramilitary war is a real war. You Freakin' Treasonist!

3. A similar thing happened to me about 45 years ago.

I was at a friend's place with a bunch of people and the cops came in and lined us up. Then they gave us each some dope, saying, "This is for you, this is for you, this is for you...." They arrested all of us, but most of us, like me, who didn't have prior drug convictions, were let go. A few years later a book came out about these guys, how they had something like a 98% conviction record and how great they were. A few years after THAT they got busted planting dope, convicted, and sentenced to 8 years in prison. I carefully clipped the newspaper article out of the paper, went to the library, and pasted it onto the back page of that book.

This kind of thing has happened so often that these days, if you're a prosecutor and all you have against a defendant is the cops' word, you want to get a plea bargain or go before a wingnut judge, because a jury is unlikely to convict. I know I certainly wouldn't.
