Iraq war sparks recruitment crisis - UK
http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/main.jhtml?xml=/news/2005/05/01/nirq01.xml&sSheet=/news/2005/05/01/ixhome.html

Defence chiefs have blamed the unpopularity of the war in Iraq for a recruitment crisis that has left 90 per cent of the Army's fighting units under strength, The Telegraph can reveal.

The crisis is now so serious that senior officers believe that some regiments will be incapable of taking part in operations in Iraq without significant reinforcements from other parts of the Army.

Thirty-eight of the Army's 40 infantry battalions are under strength, including all three battalions of the Parachute Regiment, all six infantry regiments that make up the Scottish Division and the entire Guards Division. Large parts of the Royal Artillery and the logistic units are also under-manned.

Senior officers said that a series of public relations disasters, including the controversy over the legality of the Iraq war and prisoner abuse incidents there, the deaths of recruits at Deepcut barracks and defence cuts have sent recruitment into decline. The Army predicts that only 1,400 recruits will join the infantry this year, a fall of 35 per cent. There are also similar shortfalls in the artillery, the cavalry and the Royal Marines, all of which have seen active service in Iraq.

4. There won't be a draft...
...the political climate in Britain doesn't allow it, also the military establishment is resistant to the idea of conscription.

The more likely scenario would be for Britain to gradually cut down it's contingent on Iraq due to the recruitment shortfall, which it's already planning to do.

6. Yes.
Committing troops to Iraq almost cost Blair his job. Committing troops to Iran is electoral suicide for Labour and Tony Blair. He's already skating on very thin ice.

8. The BFEE HAS SOMETHING on Bliar. What Else Could It Be?
They have got to be blackmailing Bliar somehow. Nothing else makes sense.
There is absolutely nothing in this for Bliar or the UK.
It will bring about the downfall of Labor,
and usher in another generation of Tory rule.
(See Boosh** hit the Trifecta AGAIN!).

Labor has to dump Bliar NOW!
That is the only way they can save their party.

12. Perhaps his childhood has something to do with it.
Like Bill Clinton, he lost his father when he was young. Also, his mother died a slow agonizing death when he was young and he was beaten up in school.

16. He didn't actually 'lose' his father
Edited on Sun May-01-05 10:17 AM by muriel_volestrangler
His father had a stroke, which ended his career as a barrister. I think his father, Leo Blair, is still alive - he certainly was in 1995, when he gave up his membership of the Conservative Party to show his support for his son. http://www.thecanadianencyclopedia.com/index.cfm?PgNm=TCE&Params=M1ARTM0011331

And I don't think your link says he was beaten up - he was beaten - ie corporal punishment. That was quite common in a private school then (as his school friend says in that link, 'Beatings were a regular part of school life for all of us').

19. I'm not to precise with only one cup of coffee!
So I won't post again until I've had another one. :-)

But, anyway, I've noticed that there is often trauma and/or loss in the childhoods of the people who are destroying our world.

background is 100% bullshit.

He is Peter Freeman, son of a Russian prostitute who is still alive in the UK.

His criminal career began when he raped and attepted to murder a 9 year old member of the British royal family in the 1960s. On orders received directly from George Bush Sr who was busy whitewashing everything to do with the assasination of JFK and the attempt to classify Marilyn Monroe's murder as suicide.

For the last 30 years Freeman has been head of the IRA Military Council and responsible for the planning, financing and execution of all mainland UK bombings since 1974.

Since 1980 he has been protected by a series of cover-ups instigated by Thatcher on orders from Ronnie Raygun.

Freeman is also at the heart of a massive UK property fraud/moneylaundering scam that led to the collapse of first Banco Ambrosiano and then BCCI, which raised loans on stolen asstes and then couldn't repay them when they got busted for it.

He is persoannly responsible for over 100 UK mainland executions of prominent public figures. Whom he then replaced with ID theft lookalikes that were bankrolled from the proceeds of drug dealing and arms sales.

And for ensuring that at many of his IRA cronies - especially those Russian-born relatives - have got plum jobs in public office, the judiciary and the legislature.

Ever wondered where all those "illegal" asymlum seekers from the 1960s ended up? In his administration.

BUT......The UK Cops and the MI5/6 have his entire criminal career classified under encrypted files relating to the July 1986 "disappearance" of UK estate agent Suzy Lamplugh - whom he shot in Fulham just before Robert Maxwell was busted in a pedophile brothel in Hampstead run by the Children of God cult.

Expect a military coup d'etat in the UK imminently.

13. people always assume that what they have on Blair
is some dark secret from his past. But if that were true, I think it would have been leaked long ago for the good of the country.

I think it is more likely that he has been told, "comply or we wreck your economy", or even "comply or we have a "new pearl harbour type event" in London."

The only possible counter measure to either of these would be a Chavez style approach of telling everyone!

Go on Tony!! You'll feel much better afterwards, and the people will love you once more.

9. There was a Poster Back in the '60's
Edited on Sat Apr-30-05 11:23 PM by AndyTiedye

The original was much brighter and more colorful than this image.

Does anyone have one of the original posters?

I think DU ought to do a reprint.

I'm sure the original artist wouldn't mind.
