Father: Bayh considering White House run
Edited on Sat Apr-30-05 11:01 PM by LiberalFighter
Indianapolis Star 11:53AM

Sen. Evan Bayh is giving “serious consideration” to running for president, according to his father, former Sen. Birch Bayh.

The younger Bayh has received considerable mention as a possible Democratic presidential hopeful in 2008, but his father’s words Friday appeared to be the strongest indication that a White House run may be planned.

“I think he’s giving that serious consideration,” Birch Bayh told about 200 people at Ivy Tech State College’s second annual O’Bannon Institute for Community Service.

/snip/

Bayh that his son is more serious and more conservative than he was.

It's got to be a Gov.

There is no forum for debating issues any more. There is no media.

Another approach must be taken.

difference? AND, he voted for the Bankruptsy Bill. No one who voted for that abomination deserves anyone's support.

27. I don't care for Bayh either but....
he is still better than most/any Republican.

When the General Assembly failed to pass Collective Bargaining for state workers he signed an executive order allowing them to bargain.

That Executive Order has allowed state employees to be represented since 1992 until the current governor a bitch of a person refused to extend it. (Bitch is used because it rhymes with his name)

If Bayh does become the nominee then I will vote for him but in the meantime there will be other candidates.

She is Republican lite...she helped TATA get est. in NY
in order to offshore outsource thousands of jobs
and is co-chair of the India caucus...you know our representatives
who assist with the best interest of India?

Sorry, Republican lite.

Bayh voted for the bankruptcy bill...

so clearly he's not for the people either...

we need someone who is going to stick up for the middle class...
get that and the democrats will win...not another "corporate party"
member
so the choice for President turns into "corporate party member" mit abortion oder nicht

12. Wow, these responses surprise me
I have to admit that I am not the world's foremost authority on Evan Bayh, but somehow I have him mentally pigeonholed as pretty conservative for a Dem. I am not in the camp that says that is a good thing.

Would someone care to educate me about this man? What makes him such a palatable presidential candidate?

15. What makes him "palatable"?
Damned if I know. He's head of the DLC, styles himself as one of those "New Democrats", which is just a Code Word for ReTHUGlican Lite, and his ONLY redeeming quality is that he doesn't WHINE like Jowly Joe does.

Birch ought to take him out to the woodshed and practice some of the old-fashioned Hoosier "child abuse" on his ass.

He was a damn fine Governor. If my party picks hime to run in '08, I'm joining either the Greens or the Communists.

37. I don't know who it will be in 2008
Just like in 2004 we will all have to rally around whoever wins the nomination. This is about winning the election. Whatever it takes to get people to vote with us is how I see the big picture. Like it or not Bayh has the qualities they look for in a candidate who will appeal to the moderate conservatives as well....

40. Be ready to hold your nose then.
I'm telling you, the only things different between Evan Bayh and Joe Liebermann are age and Evan doesn't whine.

I witheld my vote on Bayh last time. I will not vote for him again.
If had wanted a Liberal ReTHUGlican to be my Senator, I'd had thrown my vote to Marvin Scott.

I don't vote for ReTHUGlicans, even if they call themselves "Democrats"

19. I'd sooner vote for a Joe Lieberman and Zell Miller ticket
Evan Bayh is not family friendly, woman-friendly, GLBT-friendly, and not much of a plus on fiscal issues. I might give him a pass on veteran's issues, but I'll look into that too--I think John McCain is a better Democrat overall (don't point out my ignorance on this, I'm aware of what I just typed...)

35. Wow, worse than a Lieb/Miller ticket? Worse than another repug,
even if it is McCain? (please to remember McCain's wet kisses to bush during the election) We seem to be whittling down our choices day by day. Not a criticism because I admit not knowing much about Bayh, but at some point I hope a Dem candidate will start to generate some positive sparks. So far the only names that seem to get lots of applause are Boxer and Obama, but I doubt that this country would come together at this time for a woman and a man of color.

22. I don't know much about him.
The bankruptcy bill is a minus for me. Other than that, I just hear plenty of people here on DU saying that he's "too conservative." But then again, the average candidate preference on here is pretty far to the left, so that judgement doesn't say very much. :P

My overall voting preference process goes something like this:

Primaries --> First, eliminate all candidates who won't nominate at least Ginsburg-caliber judges; these candidates will not be considered. Then, from the remaining candidates, identify who could most likely bring a key electoral state or region or demographic into the blue column. This will determine my primary vote.

General Election --> vote for the Democrat, unless the nominated candidate fails my judges test.

I don't know where Bayh stands on judges..

30. Nooooooooooooooooo!
Please, no!

IMHO he doesn't stand a snowball's chance in hell. I don't know one person here in this area who respects him as a senator. The best way they describe him is: he's not his father.

As a senator, he fails to respond to his constituents - I can't tell you how many letters and emails I've sent him with no response. That doesn't inspire confidence.

39. Bayh lost me when he voted for the BANKRUPTCY BILL
Edited on Sun May-01-05 01:41 PM by Selatius
He can run, but I'm going to vote for someone else in the primaries if I believe they are better. If the Democratic Party as an organization offers this man up as the next candidate for president of the US, I'll simply state that it is pathetic given that he has voted to harm poor Americans with no recourse but bankruptcy. If that is the best the Democratic Party can do, I'm sitting out the election or voting third party instead.

I've participated at the local level and done my time, but I'll be damned if I'm going to be taken for another ride just because he is a Democrat like me. My allegiance is to my principles, not to the party.
