McCloskey, other GOP elders seeking opponent for DeLay
By RICHARD STEWART
Copyright 2005 Houston Chronicle

Former U.S. Rep. Pete McCloskey, in Houston Sunday for a conference on Palestinian issues, said he and other Republican elders are looking for a candidate to oppose U.S. Rep. Tom DeLay, R-Sugar Land.

"Tom DeLay is an embarrassment to the Republican Party," said McCloskey, who represented Northern California from 1967 to 1983.

He met Sunday with Michael Fjetland, who was defeated by DeLay in Republican primaries in 2000 and 2002 and as an independent in the 2004 general election.

McCloskey is one of nine former congressmen who have formed an informal group he called the "revolt of the elders," to oppose congressmen who they think are guilty of ethics violations.

"Nobody can come into a Texas district and tell the voters who to support," McCloskey said.

But, he added, that just as DeLay raises money from outside the district, his opponents in the next election will also probably get national support

Delay is in for a fight!!!

5. Lala:
Pete McCloskey was not a bad guy at all. As I remember him, he had more than a little integrity.

I think this is heartening that some of the old, more mainline Repugs have finally decided to step up in this. I assure you, they know where some long-dormant piles of political cash is buried.

Not all of them are thugs and criminals. They have just been laying low, biding their time.

2. Nice! You know DeLay is in trouble big time now...
When even members of his own party are openly seeking to run candidates against him.

Looks like The Hammer is about to get Hammered.

30. Here is a list of names from a previous article
http://www.chron.com/cs/CDA/ssistory.mpl/front/3136907

<snip>

These Republicans who are former congressmen signed a letter criticizing House ethics committee rules changes put into place by Republican leaders after the panel admonished Houston Majority Leader Tom DeLay:
• Mark Andrews, North Dakota
•John H. Buchanan, Alabama
• M. Caldwell Butler, Virginia
• Paul Findley, Illinois
• Bud Hillis, Indiana
•James Johnson, Colorado
• Richard W. Mallary, Vermont
• Wiley Mayne, Iowa
• G. William Whitehurst, Virginia
• Pete McCloskey, California

McCloskey said GOP moderates are concerned with the harsh partisan tone in Washington and the party's move to the right, which has been critical to the GOP's success in recent elections.

6. Pete McCloskey is a GREAT Republican and a GREAT American.
I worked with him back in '72 when he ran an outspoken campaign against the Vietnam war and against the fascist regime of Richard Nixon.

If I remember correctly, he's a former Marine from the Korean era. He looks (looked?) a lot like JFK. Haven't heard his name in years. He must hate Bush even more than we do.

7. And he KOed Pat Robertson in court
They were in the same unit in the Marines together. On the day they shipped out to fight in Korea, Pat got yanked from the outfit, and bragged that his daddy, the Senator had sprung him.

McCloskey went public with the story years later, and Robertson sued him for slander. McCloskey stuck to his gun, and made Robertson ended up running away with his tail between his legs. Again.

8. Agreed, I worked with him for one day in a little law office back in
1993. It was just the two of us and we talked quite a bit. I was very impressed by his decency. He asked if I had been to Nam and if so was I in the Marines. I told him yes but in the Army, however my father was a Marine that had fought on Iwo Jima,Saipan and Tinian. He went to his car and came back with a copy of his recently published book. He signed it to my father and told me to see that my father recieved it. I didn't get a copy, but then I hadn't been a Marine. Fair enough.

9. He was a part of Republicans for Kerry I think
He's a good guy and I'm glad to still
hear his sane voice. Just wish he'd
come over to the light side.

A sane Republican wouldn't be a bad
thing to run against DeLay in the
next primary unless DeLay decides
to spend more time with his family...

16. Roger that in spades!
He's not just a former Marine, he's a Medal of Honor holder--he held off some appalling number of Chinese pretty much singlehandedly, and somehow lived to tell the tale. :patriot:

I had the privilege of meeting him briefly while working on news coverage of the fall of Cambodia with Robert McNeil--that'd be almost thirty years ago to the day! Great guy, looked like a working stiff, very straightforward, very cordial, tough as nails when he had to be, but always with the best of motives. Off the record when the camera stopped, he had a pleasant conversation with McNeil during which he referred to the Nixon administration as "those bastards".

So glad he's still around and still the same tough, courageous hero!

SEMPER FI, MAC!

Hell of a guy. Think it was the Navy Cross and Silver Star he won.

I was getting my MBA at the Wharton School, U of P, and organized a chapter of the Vietnam Vets Against the War. We did a fundraiser with Pete in Phila. I kept calling him "Sir" and "Colonel." He asked me just to call him Pete.

He's the kind of guy you'd follow to hell and back.:patriot:

Even though I was Army, in the spirit of shared values, here's one, big:

Navy Cross, Silver Star, and two Purple Hearts in Korea. I remember that he ran against Nixon in the 1972 primaries as well. Damn--the Republican party needs a few good men like him! Come to that, the Democrats do, too!

12. The group of elders gather once more...
Deep in the crypt of a republican strong hold, slow rhythmic drumming reverberates through out the hall. Several hooded men gather to decide the fate of one of their own...

Bother dole: delay has become something of a problem...

brother schultz: banish him!

brother watt: banish him...

brother bush sr: banish him...

brother dole: we find, according to by law 5, section 6, subparagraph 3, roman numeral 12, article 4...

brother thurman: get on with it!

brother dole: ahem, delay is guilty of being a RW...

The group gasps!

brother quail: umm, RW? right wing? hey, isn't that us anyway? I mean, we are all right wing...

brother chaney slaps him upside the head.

brother chaney: Republican weenie! who let this dolt join anyway?

brother dole: so it is agreed that delay is to be banished?

brother thurman: banished...

brother watt: banished...

brother schultz: yeah yeah, banished, can I go now? I have a tee time in 10...

brother dole: Silence! So it is agreed, from this point forward, delay is not allowed to smoke Cuban cigars ever again!

27. OMG... WTF?? I shouldn't be surprised, I guess
I just googled Delay and, on the right side of the Google screen, under the sponsored links, was the link "Pray for Tom Delay" and underneath, "Only prevailing prayer will protect him from his political enemies."

Man, these people are effing NUTS!!!!

But, encouragingly, above and below this sponsored link are these links: "The truth about Tom Delay," "Tom Delay Should Resign," and "Don't delay Oust DeLay."

So it's not all bad news...

29. I have to brag, we got to meet Pete in San Jose at a Marine Corps
birthday ball several years ago, he was the gueat of honor. My husband was doing reserve duty with Beach and Port, right after getting out of the regular MC. Pete and his wife were so unpretentious. Two years ago we had trouble with our school meeting our sons medical issues(diabetes and a 504 agreement). I called Pete to see if he could help or refer us, he called back and listened to our situation and was willing to help us. He knew my husband was a former Marine he had met and I think that is why he returned our call. His book is a very good read. Navy Cross winner too.

Subj: Message for Pete McCloskey

Hello,

I worked with Pete back in '72 when I was an MBA student at the U of PA (Wharton) and a Vietnam combat vet who had organized a group of Nam vets at the school to oppose the war.

I am so happy to see he is doing well and still on the warpath. He is a great hero to me and to many others.

I frequently spend time at a web site called DemocraticUnderground-dot-com.
We've been discussing Pete and how great his contributions have been and how stellar a role he's played in the Republican party. One day, his toil will pay dividends. For the moment, the Dark Side must be explored, it seems, so that its inherent flaws can be made obvious. Such is life.

The discussion on Pete, joined by a number of admirers, is at:
http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_topic&forum=102&topic_id=1438441#1441825
(I am the poster named "Merlin.")

Please give Pete my very best and thank him in behalf of so very many of us out here who know of his great work and appreciate what he continues to do for our country.

37. McCloskey's a GREAT man, Sterling. He called out Pat Robertson.
...in 1988 and he opposed Nixon in 1972.

Here's a bit of the story on Marion the Chickenhawk Robertson:

Per modern GOP tradition, Marion "Pat" Robertson is a chickenhawk. Unlike most neo-kons, the unctuous turd actually abandoned the men he was to lead into combat during the Korean War. Instead of landing and fighting with his platoon, the young Marine second lieutenant cabled his US Senator daddy and got off the boat in Yokohama so he could fulfill his destiny as a TV preacher 'n' African diamond tycoon. The source of the Korea story is the real Republican Pete McCloskey, who was a fellow Marine officer aboard the troop transport in 1951.
