The Daily Show correspondent Stephen Colbert gets his own show
http://jam.canoe.ca/Television/2005/05/03/1024158-ap.html

NEW YORK (AP) - If Comedy Central's Jon Stewart is the comic version of Peter Jennings or Brian Williams, Stephen Colbert promises to be the same for Bill O'Reilly and others like him. The Daily Show regular will star each night in The Colbert Report, likely starting in September. Comedy Central is revamping its schedule, recognizing that late-night programming is essentially prime time for its youthful audience.

... Besides lampooning O'Reilly, the king of the cable TV opinion shows, he's sending up people such as Sean Hannity, Joe Scarborough and Anderson Cooper, he said.

One segment of his show, Worthy Opponent, will feature Colbert debating Colbert.

"I always wanted to do more with this character," he said. While The Daily Show skewers reporters, its primary focus is on newsmakers. The Colbert Report will look full time at the news process, with a backstage look at his character and interview subjects.

I tivo'd it on the rerun yesterday. He spoofed the first lady in her "comedy routine." He was out of control. Absolutely hilarious.

50. Our cable provider...
offers recording of programs much like TIVO. It's great to have, the only drawback is you have to watch what's being recorded...can't change channels and watch something else, but it works for shows like DS that come on late and I have to get up early for work,so I watch them a day later, but who cares.

20. But If Colbert does this, it means he'll be on TDS less
That kind of Sucks:evilfrown:

"...The extra workload means he'll sharply curtail appearances on The Daily Show, he said.

The series will air four nights a week, as will an untitled show with Adam Carolla that pokes fun at pop culture events of the day. Carolla's show will have a celebrity guest and viewer participation.

The two shows will directly follow The Daily Show, which airs Monday through Thursday at 11 p.m. Comedy Central hasn't decided which will come first, spokesman Tony Fox said..."
(clip)

"...Comedy Central usually gets as many viewers during the late-night hours as it does during traditional network prime time (8-to-11 p.m.). It will often have as many viewers at 4 a.m. as it does at 6 p.m., network researchers said..."

(I guess the "Adam Carolla Show" is to bring in the NON-intellectual elites?)

56. Adam Carolla ..sorry.. no sale
I have never found him funny..

I am happy for Colbert, BUT, I hate to see the really funny guys leaving The daily Show..

I would have preferred that they make the Daily show a 90 minute show with extended segments ... Sometimes the lamest part of TDS is the "guest segment".. They could ditch that completely ..

Looming ahead though.. When Dave Letterman retires, I think Jon Stewart will be the heir apparent..and when he leaves TDS, there will be a huge void because he cannot do on CBS, what he does now..

65. My greatest fear...
...is that nothing he ever does can possibly be as perfect as his Daily Show work. The Colbert Report bits have been terrific, but I do worry about how well that schtick will fill a half-hour.

I acted with Colbert a few times in college and community theater. He was obviously destined for show business, and I'm delighted that he's come so far. Go Stephen!

34. Actually, He May Very Well Be Another Bill O'Reilly
Al Franken said on his show that during the correspondent dinner, he chatted with Stephen Colbert and found him to be a fundamentalist Christian who doesn't believe the poor should get government benefits.

So, in short, I'm preparing myself for a nasty suprise.

i believe i heard the same segment, al mentioned that he and steven colbert (who al mentioned is a christian) went to talk to Focus on the Family's James Dobson who claims that government should not attempt to help the poor.

in short, it was Al and Stephen who catted with james dobson who doesn't believe the poor should get government benefits.\

I love Stephen Colbert, and this sounds great on a surface-level. But many spinoffs fail. His comedy routine works great in segments and when he's playing off someone else like Jon. Would it work as well if it were just him? I do hope he has others on the cast and I hope he has a taped audience.

48. details in NYT article: TDS will segue into new Colbert show seamlessly
Edited on Wed May-04-05 08:38 AM by Bozita
http://www.nytimes.com/2005/05/04/arts/television/04come.html?

-snip-

That "The Daily Show" has reached the point that it is considered ripe for a spinoff is something of a milestone for the program and for Comedy Central, which is owned by Viacom. But in moving Mr. Colbert off "The Daily Show" - he is expected to make only intermittent return visits - the network is also risking diluting a recipe that has made it so popular.

To that end, Comedy Central is considering ripping an actual page from the cable news networks it so often mocks, and having Mr. Stewart, at the end of his half-hour show, share a split-screen with Mr. Colbert, in what is known in the news business as a "throw" or "toss."

"It could be kind of seamless," said Doug Herzog, president of Comedy Central and Spike TV, who presided over the debut of "The Daily Show" in 1996. "It would have the effect of extending 'The Daily Show' to a full hour."

-snip-
