Pataki Says Freedom Tower Needs Redesign
http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/attacks_freedom_tower

The Freedom Tower to be built on the former World Trade Center site must be redesigned to address security concerns raised by the police department, Gov. George Pataki said Wednesday following a meeting with the mayor and other officials.

"We believe that a building that meets the NYPD standards can be built consistent with (architect) Daniel Libeskind's master site plan," Pataki said in a statement.

The meeting between Pataki, Mayor Michael Bloomberg, World Trade Center developer Larry Silverstein, city police Commissioner Raymond Kelly and other officials was sparked by a security assessment the police department provided last month.

The New York Times reported Sunday that because of the assessment, Silverstein has proposed seeking public financing — possibly hundreds of millions of dollars — to address security concerns.

Talk about tacky and overdone...:eyes:

I don't understand why it needs to be the symbolic 1776 ft tall. I'm sure there are shorter, safer, more economical options that would still look great.

4. You know, I hate stories like this...
they are the same as all the "terror warnings" leading up to the 2004 election (funny how those have stopped, huh?).

This is basically a non-story with absolutely no facts or reasoning, good going Pataki.

It really belongs to the families of those that perished in the WTC. No one who lives in or near NYC or has any feel for the truth of 9/11 would vote for Pataki. He is pandering for the votes of the far right Repukes.
What did they build on the site of the Oklahoma bombing? A memorial park! That is what should be built here too...but the real estate is to valuable for them to build that...so the "Freedom" Tower is what we will have to live with. Just another target for future terrorists if you ask me...and I live within fallout distance of the WTC.

14. How about naming it something else?
"Freedom" Tower makes me think of the "Freedom Fries" farce, and the "Let Freedom Ring" and "Freedom is on the march" hypocrisies.
How about the:
"The Blowback Towers"?
or
"Manhattan Real Estate is too Valuable to have a Real Memorial Towers"?

The word 'Freedom' has forever been ruined for me by the Chimpocrats

20. It wasn't a waste
Certain people got paid and now since the idea was scrapped,
we will never find out exactly how they spent all those hours that they billed for.
I would LOVE to be highly paid for a project that does not require me to actually DO anything since it is going to be canceled three years down the line.

32. Freedom Tower redesign
David Teather in New York
Friday May 6, 2005
The Guardian

The architects behind the Freedom Tower - the replacement for the twin towers destroyed in the September 11 attacks - have been sent back to the drawing board yet again.

The building on the site of the former World Trade Centre in the financial district of New York is expected to undergo significant changes to address security concerns.

The soaring tower is likely to lose its signature twisting form as well as the spire that was designed to echo the upraised arm of the Statue of Liberty.

The announcement is the latest setback in a project that has been plagued by delays and infighting.

40. Indeed. A nice green park
Especially in a city which has been build solid. Somewhere you can feed the ducks and let the children play. It's a lot cheaper as well.

But the government wants a phallus!
