Kazakhstan shuts down opposition paper
http://www.swissinfo.org/sen/swissinfo.html?siteSect=143&sid=5755984&cKey=1115300108000

ALMATY (Reuters) - Kazakhstan has ordered the closure of one of the central Asian state's few newspapers that criticises the president, in the latest sign of a crackdown ahead of a possible election in December.

Respublika is one of the few papers to report on a long-stalled U.S. court case in which prosecutors have alleged that Nazarbayev received more than $60 million in bribes from a businessman acting as a go-between for Western oil companies.

1. Bush and Cheney are also involved in the bribery scandal

The GOP presidential ticket may be fending off questions from reporters concerning a Swiss investigation linking George W. Bush and Dick Cheny to big oil's bribes and pay-offs to foreign interests.

2. jUST ANOTHER ALLY IN THE WAR ON
terror who uses his support for bush to crack down on any political opposition, claiming islamic extremism.

Its funny how after 9/11 all these places around the world that had'nt even registered on the radar suddenly had serious terrorist issues within their country.

Thousands of arrests were made around central asia in theweeks following 9/11 as every tin pot dictator used it as cover to make a lot of people disappear.

The British Ambassador to Uzbeckistan (which borders Kazickstan) began to raise serious concerns over another of our allies behaviour. This included boiling political opponents to death in vats of water.

He was promptly recalled to Britain and sacked.

He is today standing as an independent candidate against Jack Straw the foreign secretary.

3. Bush says Kazakhstan good, opposition paper bad
Joint Statement by President Bush and Kazakhstan President
Joint Statement by President George W. Bush and President Nursultan Nazarbayev on the New Kazakhstan-American Relationship

http://www.whitehouse.gov/news/releases/2001/12/20011221-10.html

We declare our commitment to strengthen the long-term, strategic partnership and cooperation between our nations, seeking to advance a shared vision of a peaceful, prosperous and sovereign Kazakhstan in the 21st Century that is increasingly integrated into the global economy and the community of democratic nations. To this end, we will advance our cooperation on counterterrorism and non-proliferation, democratic political and free-market economic reform, and market-based investment and development of energy resources.

We also intend to cooperate to advance Kazakhstan's integration in the global economy by supporting Kazakhstan's accession to the World Trade Organization on the basis of standard and agreed criteria, and its graduation from the Jackson-Vanik Amendment.

(Oops, this won't help Kazakhstan's WTO ambitions)

And here's the kicker:

Recognizing that democracy is a cornerstone of long-term stability, we reaffirm our desire to strengthen democratic institutions and processes, such as independent media, local government, pluralism, and free and fair elections. We also reiterate our mutual commitments to advance the rule of law and promote freedom of religion and other universal human rights as promoted by the United Nations and the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe, of which we are both members. Finally, we pledge to enhance understanding between the citizens of our two countries by promoting people-to-people exchanges, initiatives of non-governmental organizations, and contacts between business people.
