Council's Republicans seek ouster of elections director
By GREGORY ROBERTS SEATTLE POST-INTELLIGENCER REPORTER
The Republican minority on the King County Council is taking another run at beleaguered county Elections Director Dean Logan, but the leader of the Democratic majority said yesterday the attack is nothing but a political ploy and the council should ignore it.
GOP Councilman Reagan Dunn said yesterday he'll ask the council to approve a motion of no confidence in Logan. The measure urges Democratic County Executive Ron Sims to consider asking Logan to quit -- something that Dunn himself urged Logan to do last month, to no avail.
"I do believe it needs to happen in the best interests of election reform," Dunn said. "There is no trust or confidence by citizens in this elections director."
Dunn's measure ticks off several foul-ups in the November 2004 election in King County, including the counting of nearly 800 provisional ballots without the required validation of voter eligibility beforehand; the failure to tally 95 valid absentee ballots overlooked by elections workers; the participation of hundreds of ineligible felon voters in the election; and the mistaken exclusion of 566 valid absentee ballots from two machine counts because workers failed to check voters' signatures adequately (an error corrected for the final hand recount after a court order).
