Knight Ridder: Memo: Bush made intel fit Iraq policy
By WARREN P. STROBEL and JOHN WALCOTT

Knight Ridder Newspapers

http://www.charlotte.com/mld/charlotte/11574258.htm

WASHINGTON - A highly classified British memo, leaked in the midst of Britain's just-concluded election campaign, indicates that President Bush decided to overthrow Iraqi President Saddam Hussein by summer 2002 and was determined to ensure that U.S. intelligence data supported his policy.

The document, which summarizes a July 23, 2002, meeting of British Prime Minister Tony Blair with his top security advisers, reports on a visit to Washington by the head of Britain's MI-6 intelligence service.

The visit took place while the Bush administration was still declaring to the American public that no decision had been made to go to war.

"There was a perceptible shift in attitude. Military action was now seen as inevitable," the MI-6 chief said at the meeting, according to the memo. "Bush wanted to remove Saddam through military action, justified by the conjunction of terrorism and WMD," weapons of mass destruction.

The memo said "the intelligence and facts were being fixed around the policy."

=========

I cld not believe this is not in LBN yet. It is on the front page of this morning's Charlotte Observer. Once again Knight Ridder provides a semblance of non-whorishness to the corporate media cartel.

1. I called and complained that my edition had Memo HINTS Bush made intel fit
I said - Why did you lie in your headline that the memo only hints that the intel was fixed when the memo clearly states it was being fixed and your own Knight-Ridder reporters were reporting this exact same news since Oct. 2002?

I suggest others call in and do the same. 704-358-5040.

In the election are a direct result of this memo, I can't see how the Amurican media can cover the british election without taking this into consideration in their analysis.

In related news 88 members of the house have addressed this question, but why only 88?

23. The fact that this has only scant posts on DU means what I fear most is
true. Not many Americans, even the ones that complain about Bush here on the DU, want to admit that this regime is controlled, evil, and has duped them many times. The only way this could be true is that they have succumbed to their inner most racist, sexist, hypocritical, ignorant, intolerant conscientiousness which is not how they want to see themselves.

24. We all knew this back in 2002, we are not amazed but I think that
it will not make on bit of difference in how the sheeple feel because they don't care anymore.

This administration has been so far over the top that it doesn't phase anyone anymore. There will be no outrage. And the beat goes on.

People don't want to know the worst. The loss of democracy, the loss of innocence, the loss of integrity, who gives a fuck?

25. That's a tough statement.
It's scary to think what you say, may be true. I've noticed that this isn't NEARLY as huge as the thread(S) regarding the NC Church who excommunicated the democrat members. As I have said before, I think everyday, major abuses are being reported..here (not in the corporate media) and people may be getting exhausted and overwhelmed by trying to put out the fire, day in and day out. Almost as though they're being defeated by a strong NASTY wind, and the blaze goes further and goes higher and gets hotter.

I know when I'm overwhelmed, I get less done, than I would on a day that I only have a few things going on, and I'm not so bogged down.

35. tough statement...but I don't feel it is true.
We here at DU have known for a long time that Bush wanted this war and made the intel fit. This has been discussed many times in these forums.

I feel that halobeam is right -- we read these incriminating stories regarding the rethugs and nothing ever happens. It kind of "takes the wind out of your sails after awhile." I often feel that there is nothing I can say that hasn't already been said. So, I read what has been posted and go on my way.

Besides...we all know that we are preaching to the choir here. It doesn't mean that we don't care, but how many times and ways can you say "Bush lied and people are dying."?

Just my two cents worth.

Now John Bolton's nomination as ambassador to the UN makes more sense. When Bolton told aides who said Syria and Cuba did NOT have WMDs to shove it, he was simply following in the footsteps of his mentor, da Shrub. Hey, it's simple! If the facts contradict the objective, lie, lie, and lie some more.

People (those who are not very aware and others) are just burnt out on anything political.

I hear it all the time. I bring up this stuff and all I get is, "So what? Will it change anything? We're stuck with him."

And I YELL (yes, YELL) -- "One word for you, IMPEACHMENT!"

I mean, can't they get the "blowjob" vs. "DEAD AMERICAN SOLDIERS" connection?

Sheesh.

Sick, I tell you... makes me sick.

42. What a tangled Web bush* has woven.
This MEMO is PROOF of so much more than a single LIE.
It exposes HUNDREDS of bush* LIES.

*The excuse that bush* had bad intelligence is now a PROVEN LIE!

*The Hundreds of times bush* claimed that Congress had the SAME intelligence he had is NOW A PROVEN LIE!

*The Many pre-War claims that he hadn't made his mind up about Iraq IS NOW A PROVEN LIE!!

*The many times bush* claimed Saddam was a threat to the US were NOT mistakes, the statements are NOW PROVEN LIES!!

Hundreds of times (maybe thousands) George bush* stood before the WORLD and willfully and knowingly LIED and LIED and LIED to further his own selfish interests.

Someone needs to make a Video of just a few of these public appearances where it in now PROVEN that bush* was KNOWINGLY and WILLFULLY telling LIES!!!!

I'm with Dr. Fate on this!

Where are the Democratic Leaders on THIS??
Why are they keeping silent ??
Why are they helping bush* LIE??
Their public silence on this ISSUE is an indictment of complicity!!!
They can NOW cover their OWN asses...bush* LIED TO THEM!!

My local paper published this story also - and I'm in Texas. Fortunately, the Star-Telegram here in Fort Worth is a Knight-Ridder paper so they often print the stories out of the K-R Washington Bureau, which is one of the only beltway news organizations with any guts left.

It makes me very happy I get the Star-Telegram instead of the Dallas Morning News, which is about as right-wing as the New York Post or the Washington Times.
