175. and after all the reports of a finally "warm" welcome for bush
after his whole euro visit - all the reports were of his finally (my word not theirs) getting a warm reception in Georgia. I guess warm means that while not throwing verbal grenades, the only grenade thrown was a literal one, but a dud.

Sarcasm aside, I do hope that this is a false story. It is very frightening that a grenade, even a dud, could be lobbed at the president of the United States. Attempted assassination is no laughing matter. Regardless of how one feels about the administration... this is seriously frightening. I am glad it was a dud, and that the president is safe. I don't think this country would make it through in one piece through the chaos that would follow at this point in history.

165. Bush didn't even see it nor did the secret service - another lie!
Bush and his SS weren't even aware of it until after they left the country - there is no way that chicken man would be allowed to get that close to real danger without his babysitters knowing about it.

Just another stunt to keep the fear alive.

Somehow traipsing around dissing the soviet union's WWII efforts to defeat Hitler probably was not too good an idea when visiting the homeland of Stalin. I've heard that the miserable tyrant is having quite the revival lately. Plus everybody in the former USSR lost at least one relative in the war. Somebody should have told * to STFU.

135. Seems fishy -- Bushco bombs memo
Edited on Tue May-10-05 10:21 PM by Virginian
Georgia security called Secret Service to tell them about it -- two hours after they left. Secret Service did NOT know anything about it.

Grenade hit someone 100 yards from stage. Pin was out, it didn't explode.
Tell me who wouldn't look to see what hit them? If a grenade is in a crowd isn't the crowd going to react? If a crowd reacts, Secret Service notices. That's their job.

Something here doesn't add up.

It's like after 9/11 when Bush KNEW one of the planes was headed for the White House. How did he know? Who told him? As far as I have heard, the hijackers didn't file flight plans.

edited to Add:
This is because of that Brittish memo. It is starting to creep into the MSM so they come up with a grenade to deflect it. This is starting to make sense now. Bushco bombed the memo.

161. You're in a crowd. Something flies through the air and hits you....
You look down and you see a hand grenade.

What do you do?

Now maybe people in Georgia are so polite that even with death staring them in the face, they'd never, never interrupt a speech, even to scream a warning to everyone around them.

I really doubt that. If someone had actually thrown a grenade, and someone saw what it was, people would have been panicking all over the place and security would have been all over them.

You're right this does sound fishy.

128. cbs news said
the grenade was "found" AFTER bush had already left.

now it has morphed into "being thrown at bush", and then into "being thrown on stage".

yet there was no panic by the crowd, nor the immediate removal of bush?

i hope the reporters dig until they find it just another hoax, like so many others put out by rovie boy to divert attention from the real news.

Thrown at bush, then thrown at state, an explosive device, then a grenade...

I bet when all is said and done and reported truthfully on page 20 of your local rag, it will be a paragraph long stating it was nothing more than a child's balloon that floated on stage.

It's good to know that his security is just as strong now as it was on 9/11

A grenade was thrown within 100 feet of the stage where President Bush was giving a speech today in the former Soviet republic of Georgia, local authorities told the U.S. Secret Service.

The device did not go off and no one was hurt, the Secret Service said.

Local police told the Secret Service the device was thrown as Bush spoke in Freedom Square in Tblisi, the Georgian capital. The device hit someone and fell to the ground about 100 feet away from the stage, the Secret Service said.

The Secret Service said it was unaware of any disturbance until it was informed of the incident by Georgian police.

A device, possibly a hand grenade, was thrown toward the stage on which President Bush addressed 300,000 cheering Georgians on Tuesday, but it was not discovered until after the president's appearance, NBC News has learned.

<snip>

The incident happened while the president was speaking in the Georgian capital of Tbilisi. The event was heavily secured, with agents keeping watch from rooftops.

According to U.S. law enforcement officials, someone threw a hand grenade that landed with 100 feet of the stage where the president was speaking.

Secret Service didn't see device
NBC’s Pete Williams, reporting from Washington, said none of the Secret Service agents accompanying the president saw the device. A Georgian security official working the crowd saw it, picked it up and took it away.

And then not be noticed? This all sounds peculiar. It sounds like it wasn't thrown at all, if it existed. Maybe dropped, and probably an intentional dud. Maybe someone in Georgia was sending a message to Bush and the neo-cons, maybe Putin even. Alternatively, it could all be a bit of political theater cooked up by Bushco and the Georgian government to show what a brave leader Bush is. I can't believe Bush would get on a stage that had unscreened people within a thousand feet, let alone a hundred.

May 10, 7:16 PM EDT

Agents Check Report of Grenade Near Bush
WASHINGTON (AP) -- The Secret Service was investigating a report Tuesday that a hand grenade was thrown at the stage during President Bush's speech in the former Soviet republic of Georgia.

After Bush left Georgia on Tuesday, the Secret Service was informed by Georgian authorities of a report that a device, possibly a hand grenade, had been thrown within 100 feet of the stage during Bush's speech, hit someone in the crowd and fell to the ground, Secret Service spokesman Jonathan Cherry said.

According to the report, a Georgian security officer picked up the device and removed it from the area. The Secret Service had not seen the device as of Tuesday evening, Cherry said. It has agents in Tbilisi working with the FBI, State Department and Georgian authorities to investigate the report.

Cherry said he couldn't characterize the source of the report.

Yes, because the first instinct of a security official when they see a grenade fly near the stage of an event featuring world leaders is to pick it up.

Something's reeeeeeally weird with all this.

Nebraska, what was that whopper, someone had the coordinates of Air Force One?

And then there was the 'British Air Force jet' that almost blew his surprise visit to a mess tent in Iraq (fake turkey and all).

Then there were the WMDs that we KNEW were there and we KNEW where they were at.

Then there was that brave young heroine, Jessica Lynch, who singlehandedly fought off a whole division of crazed Iraqi soldiers.

And then... (you get the picture).

IMAGINE...our own Lord Bunnypants, basking in the glow of "tens of thousands" of people who L-O-V-E him, and all of a sudden some crazed terrorist tosses a grenade at him.

But being the war hero that he is, President Bush survives the attack unscathed, and goes on to spread democracy throughout the world.

PLEASE tell us another story, Unca Karl...I'm not sleepy yet.

159. Anyone catch Karl Rove in those crowd shots yet?
Edited on Wed May-11-05 05:23 AM by bklyncowgirl
I'm joking, of course. Rove would have hired someone else to do his dirty work. But seriously, was this a real assassination attempt?

The grenade was apparently a demolition grenade--not the sort that shatters shrapnel all over the place and it was disarmed after being dropped a pretty good distance from the stage.

Was it a rather inept assassin?

Was it a manufactured excuse by the government of Georgia to crack down on dissidents?

Or, given Bush's taking poll ratings, was it an attempt to rally Americans behind our President by faking an assassination attempt? Will they try and pin it on Iran?

Inquiring minds want to know.

164. Georgian official: Grenade found where Bush spoke in Tbilisi was dud
http://www.haaretz.com/hasen/spages/575174.html

<snip>

"Georgian security officials discovered a grenade close to U.S. President George W. Bush as he hailed the country's new democracy before a rapturous crowd on Tuesday.

Officials in the former Soviet republic, which had hosted a serving U.S. president for the first time, were at pains to play down the incident, saying it was a dud that could not explode.

Georgia's security chief, speaking to journalists on Wednesday, did not confirm an earlier report from Washington that said the device had been thrown within 30 meters (100 feet) of Bush during his speech on Tbilisi's Freedom Square.

"A (Soviet-made) RPG-5 hand grenade was found at the square," Gela Bezhuashvili, secretary of Georgia's Security Council, said. It had been discovered 50 meters (160 feet) from where Bush stood, he said, but he gave no more precise details.

"It was not in working condition. In fact there was no chance it could explode. I think the aim was to scare people and attract attention," he said."

167. So NOW it's 160 feet instead of 100...
Fish story if I ever heard one.."Honest it was THIS BIG.." A WHOPPER..

Even Wiley Coyote does a better job with his ACME explosives, at least HE gets blown up..

of course the first thing you do when someone drops a grenade is "pick it up".. what was it, a party favor?

Maybe over there they throw them around like the big inflatable Earth Ball at Earth Day festivals - Whee! Keep it in the Air Comradski! Keep it going!

If there's any truth to it at all Bush is probably still staining his sheets, well, OUR sheets, since the White House belongs to the people..

What's next, "A car narrowly almost hit the pResident today, only it didn't start that morning and it was located in Nebraska, but with his catlike reflexes he dodged it by tripping over Condi's shoelace and falling into a tree which was badly damaged by his steely and manly skull.." and that's the news..

No, not the way for this guy to go, I have a vision of him being impeached, leaving for the chopper on the WHite House lawn, ala Nixxon, turning to the crowd and giving them the big Three Fingers that make "W's" with both hands then as he climbs the stairs to the chopper he hits his head and falls backwards down the ramp - Clunk, Clink, Clunkty Clunk..

and NO ONE PICKS HIM UP or offers any assistance.

One can dream.. :)

Edited on Wed May-11-05 08:56 AM by calipendence
'First shalt thou take out the Holy Pin. Then, shalt thou count to three. No more. No less. Three shalt be the number thou shalt count, and the number of the counting shall be three. Four shalt thou not count, nor either count thou two, excepting that thou then proceed to three. Five is right out. Once the number three, being the third number, be reached, then, lobbest thou thy Holy Hand Grenade of Antioch towards thy foe, who, being naughty in My sight, shall snuff it.'

Thou didn'st count to three!

Hitler escaped a rigged airplane, a bomb going off in an underground bunker, and other assasination attempts only to die by his own hand.... Hopefully history repeats itself, before 55 million people die.

If I were going to throw a grenade, you'd better believe that baby would explode!

No way this "really" happened--I just don't see what the gain is from the story.

It doesn't make Chimp look good, or Russia look bad.

No,
I said doesn't make ** "Chimp look good" / "Russia look bad"---> (for the "Georgian audience"to which Chimp was addressing in his speech)
**no correction needed.

try not to confuse my question for others--

I 'm asking if anyone knows who gains by this "fake" grenade action.
