Bush not told about plane scare until after biking
Don't bother him, he's just the President. It's a workday for most of us, and he's out riding his bike...

Bush not told about plane scare until after biking

Updated: 7:43 p.m. ET May 11, 2005
WASHINGTON - President George W. Bush was not told for nearly an hour while he finished a bike ride about a breach in White House airspace on Wednesday that prompted the highest alert since the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks, the White House said.

The White House said the Secret Service held off informing the president because he was not in danger.

Bush was about a half-an-hour into his ride at the Patuxent Wildlife Research Center in Maryland when an unidentified Cessna airplane came near the White House, sending the Secret Service scrambling to evacuate Vice President Dick Cheney and move First Lady Laura Bush to a secure location.

White House spokesman Scott McClellan said the president's Secret Service detail was informed about the plane at about 11:59 a.m., when the decision was made to raise the threat level at the White House to "yellow."

Fighter planes were immediately scrambled to intercept the plane, and the threat level at the White House was raised all the way to "red" before the "all clear" was given at 12:14 p.m.

McClellan said Bush was informed about the incident around 12:50 p.m. at the end of his ride. He left the reserve around 12:57 p.m. and returned to the White House at around 1:30 p.m., well after the security scare had ended.

"A determination was made that the threat posed no danger to the president since he was at an off-site location, and protocols were in place to protect people in the area of the threat," McClellan said. "Those protocols did not require any presidential authority."

"Given such circumstances and the fact that the plane turned away from the White House, the decision was made to inform the president upon conclusion of his bike ride," McClellan said.

Bush had left the White House at about 11:03 a.m. and hadarrived at Patuxent for the bike ride at 11:34 a.m.

4. His wife was in possible danger
She was in the White House, and evacuated along with a visiting Nancy Reagan, at the time.

Nothing to fear, Cheney was on the job while the boy was out having his play date. la la la...

There sure is a lot of people involved in this front man. All the people who are involved with the fraud, all the tutors, coaches, all th ecoordination it takes to make sure the front man doesn't goof, working around and covering it all up. I wonder what extra money is spent with the charade.

until he was on his way home. Except that it may not have been a real grenade, it was found 100 feet from the stage he was on so he probably wasn't the target, and it was picked up off the floor after everyone left by someone who clearly wasn't concerned that it might be an explosive device.

But when he IS told something, as he was on 9/11, he doesn't seem to know how to react anyway...

30. You know what's funny...that this pResident is biking in the middle
of the day, taking at least two and one half hours for his bike ride and travel back and forth to the 'reserve' (otherwise known as private tricycle trail). I am not employed in an important government/leadership role as an occupation, but I work a regular full time job, then go home, take care of my kids, the bills and the home-- and I do not have the time to go bike riding on the weekdays!! But this dude does. He's supposed to be the President, but more than half his time is spent doing recreational activities paid for by our tax dollars.

this is an issue that our Dem leaders should be taking up; when Americans are being forced to work longer hours and take fewer vacations just to make ends meet (thanks to the policies of Bushco) The pResident is out playing on his bicycle in the middle of the work week! Hasn't he spent more than 40% of his time in office on vacation? What kind of an example is this?

35. Another reason why I do not accept Bush as president
He still acts like a spoiled rich drunken frat boy only in college because of his parent's pull and passing with C's by the same pull, supposedly minus the booze now. He has no connect with the American worker, none at all. He is a disgrace.

He's owned a ball team, he's owned oil wells, he skipped serving in the Vietnam war, he takes month long vacations at his "ranch" in Texas, he's riding his bike during the working day rather than working like the rest of us.

Politically, the one thing I'm thankful for is that as each day passes, brings us one day closer to him being gone. He's caused so much damage to the American citizens, that it will take a decade to fix. He has introduced American citizens to gloom and doom and a deteriorating standard of living.

46. hmmmmm....
President George W. Bush was not told for nearly an hour while he finished a bike ride about a breach in White House airspace on Wednesday that prompted the highest alert since the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks, the White House said.

The White House said the Secret Service held off informing the president because he was not in danger.

Let's assume for a minute that the threat was real, and this little tiny plane was indeed carrying a small amount of explosives and bearing down on the Capitol or White House.

Bush may not have been in danger, but in such a scenario, others are, including his own wife. Don't you think you'd want the president to know what was happening, so he could help coordinate an appropriate response in the event more little tiny planes started swarming some of our cities? After all, weren't the terra-ists once considering using crop dusters for their dirty deeds?

So, HE wasn't in "danger", so they let him enjoy his mid-week bike ride without disturbing him. OTHERS may have been, but what the hell! Can't disturb the president during his much-needed leisure activities.

This whole thing just reeks. The fact that they never told him is almost proof that the whole incident was planted.

57. I'm calling BULLSHIT on this story....
I have a hard time believing that the Secret Service who was with him on his bike ride (if anything, to make sure he doesn't fall off yet again) didn't do or say anything different when we were in code red.

I have a hard time believing he wouldn't have noticed the sirens and, depending on where he was, the fighter planes flying not too far from his house.

Even if it was obvious that he was ok because he wasn't at the WH, isn't there a responsibility to tell the President what is going on and to also notify him of where his family and staff have been relocated? Shouldn't he know that the VP was speeding out of town that very second? Is going on a bike ride safe enough to not even notify him of the situation that escalated to CODE RED???

Where the hell was he? I'm not buying the "he was on a bike somewhere" bs.
