Colonel Reprimanded Over Abu Ghraib Abuse
By ROBERT BURNS, AP Military Writer

WASHINGTON - The Army reprimanded and fined a colonel who was in charge of an intelligence unit at Abu Ghraib prison in Iraq during the period of prisoner abuse, but the service chose not to press criminal charges, an official said Wednesday.

Col. Thomas M. Pappas, commander of the 205th Military Intelligence Brigade, based in Germany, had faced the possibility of criminal prosecution under the Uniform Code of Military Justice, but a two-star general instead administered what the military calls nonjudicial punishment.

Pappas is among the highest ranking officers whose actions have been scrutinized in the abuse scandal. Only one general — Brig. Gen. Janis Karpinski — has been punished. She was demoted to colonel.

The question of whether Pappas would be relieved of his command had not been settled Wednesday, according to an Army official who discussed the matter only on condition of anonymity because it had not been publicly announced.

2. So the Pentagon frames a women general and now say women can't
serve in combat/combat support roles? Wow, what a bunch of manly pig fuckers! So does that mean the marines will become an 'all-male' zone?

5. I've heard her demotion was for shoplifting.
When the scrutiny is on people can find all sorts of stuff.

8. Why would a 1 star general need to shoplift?
I mean, I know that pay for an 07 is kinda meager (sarcasm) but it is enough to keep her from shoplifting. Smells like bullshit to me.

7. I wonder the same thing.
As an infantry officer, I was responsible for everything my unit did or failed to do.

There should be some officers facing time in Leavenworth - WITHOUT a retirement to look forward to.

Karpinski probably got what she deserved, but what about the company commander, the platoon leader, the battalion commander? These people had to know what was going on.

6. A slap on the wrist for a not-so-little Eichmann
This whitewash does nothing to restore shattered US credibility. Nor does it accomplish anything but heaping contempt upon the victims of torture.

Pappas has received a nod and a wink--just like any frat boy. The empire is unrepentant, and meanwhile plans its next road trip.

10. And what does the average Iraqi think?
"Gee, there's justice. Torture, abuse, and outright murder of my fellow citizens who were scooped up and imprisoned without charge or evidence, and this colonel gets a reprimand and a fine. I hope they at least told him not to do it again."
