WORST ANTI-US PROTESTS SPREAD ACROSS AFGHANISTAN

Sardar Ahmad

KABUL -- The biggest anti-US protests since the fall of the Taliban spread across Afghanistan on May 12, as unrest sparked by alleged abuse of the Koran at the US jail in Guantanamo Bay left three more people dead.

Seven people have been killed and at least 76 injured during three days of violent demonstrations, all of them in clashes with security forces and police in conservative towns east of the capital Kabul.

Angry Afghans shouting "Death to America" poured onto the streets of Kabul itself for the first time on Thursday and protests at the reported religious slur have now broken out in 10 of Afghanistan's 34 provinces.

The Koran controversy has also spread to Pakistan, where demonstrations were held in Peshwar and Quetta, two major cities close to the border with Afghanistan.

Two protesters were killed on Thursday when gunfire broke out as police stopped them marching into the eastern Afghan city of Jalalabad from a district just to the northwest, a provincial official said.

4. There is no doubt US soldiers defiled Mosques, Korans, People...
and children and women and men and babies and cows and birds and the land and the water and the air and we can never ever ever ever ever do anything that could even come close to making amends as a country or as a people and I live every single moment in the agony of that fact.

7. If
What if an American soldier was being held prisoner and the Muslim captors defiled a Bible by dousing it in feces and flushing it down the toilet? I'm sure the Christian Coalition, Ann Coulter and Focus on the Family would all urge fundamentalist Christians to react peacefully, right?

10. Afghanistan has been turned into one huge US jail
'One huge US jail'

Afghanistan is the hub of a global network of detention centres, the frontline in America's 'war on terror', where arrest can be random and allegations of torture commonplace. Adrian Levy and Cathy Scott-Clark investigate on the ground and talk to former prisoners

<snip>

Prisoner transports crisscross the country between a proliferating network of detention facilities. In addition to the camps in Gardez, there are thought to be US holding facilities in the cities of Khost, Asadabad and Jalalabad, as well as an official US detention centre in Kandahar, where the tough regime has been nicknamed "Camp Slappy" by former prisoners. There are 20 more facilities in outlying US compounds and fire bases that complement a major "collection centre" at Bagram air force base. The CIA has one facility at Bagram and another, known as the "Salt Pit", in an abandoned brick factory north of Kabul. More than 1,500 prisoners from Afghanistan and many other countries are thought to be held in such jails, although no one knows for sure because the US military declines to comment.

12. You think we're making terrorists fast enough, or should we beef up
production by doing something else horrendously stupid? Maybe, we could burn a holy man in effigy, or something like that? Rape some Muslim women on Fox channel? There's got to be more we can do to ensure the wrath of all people, everywhere. I mean we were a beacon of hope for so many, for so long. If we're going down, we ought to go down big. I'm sure Bush and Co. won't falter. If there is one thing in a million things that will make the situation any worse, they'll find it. I have faith in my leaders. They're always working so hard.

18. DOES matter.
If any president with a (D) were pulling any of the crap bush has and is pulling, he'd be frog-marched out of the White House & most likely sitting in jail waiting trial for his crimes.

Democrats aren't "PARTY UBER ALLES" the way rightwingers are. We hold our leaders accountable; republicans do not.

Just echos at this point. But, who knows what makes any popular movement catch fire. Mushareff could be looking at bad trouble. Of course nobody wants nukes to fall into the hands of extremists of any political or religious stripe (although, they have been through most of history).
