3. Surprisingly CNN is really ON this story the last couple of days!
They've been such shills for the Bush government up until now it's really surprising to see them seemingly doing a turn around!

It's like they've all swallowed some sort of huge pill that's turned them into journalists again.

30. Noam Chomsky said it real nice a few weeks ago in an interview
The press will pander to who ever they think is in power. They thought that Bush was in power or was going to be this all powerful being. They are not seeing that so they are now going to turn on him, more and more as these reports come out. This also says that they never thought Clinton was that powerful. So much for the liberal press myth.

4. Now the fall begins
Now the military knew there was no Iraq/Niger connection. Shrub is going to fall. It is not going to stop. Repugs who want to save their jobs will turn on Bush like a shark.

The "get over it" repug strategy is not going to work now.

Bush -- The worst president in history.

that the Niger-connection was double-checked and disproved and they still went on to use it in the SOTU...

7. More info on this in another thread
http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_mesg&forum=104&topic_id=43715&mesg_id=43726&page=

From Dudley_DUright's post quoting from the WP:

The president's remarks yesterday came as evidence emerged that the administration had information that seemed to guarantee that Iraq probably could not acquire nuclear material from Niger. A four-star general, who was asked to go to Niger last year to inquire about the security of Niger's uranium, told The Washington Post yesterday that he came away convinced the country's stocks were secure. The findings of Marine Gen. Carlton W. Fulford Jr. were passed up to Gen. Richard B. Myers, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff -- though it was unclear whether they reached officials in the White House.

A spokesman for Myers said last night that the general has "no recollection of the information" but did not doubt that it had been forwarded to him. "Given the time frame of 16 months ago, information concerning Iraq not obtaining uranium from Niger would not have been as pressing as other subjects," said Capt. Frank Thorp, the chairman's spokesman.

In an interview, Fulford said he came away "assured" that the supply of "yellowcake" was kept secure by a French consortium. Both Fulford, then deputy commander of the U.S. European Command and his commander, Air Force Gen. Joseph Ralston, said the issue did not surface again, although they were both routinely briefed on weapons proliferation in Africa. "I was convinced it was not an issue," Fulford said.

27. So...
The chairman of the Joint Chiefs knew, so did the State Department, and so did the CIA, and so did somebody in the White House because the CIA says they forwarded it on (the WH hasn't denied receiving it), and yet....

...the President, the secretary of wa.. sorry "defense" and the National Security Advisor had no clue?

I smell BS! :)

14. This was also reported by the Washington Post.
While it was 'buried' in their story today, it's clear that the madministration had abundant information that the Niger-uranium connection was a hoax.

Quoting...

Fulford was asked by the U.S. ambassador to Niger, BarbroOwens-Kirkpatrick, to join her at the meeting with Niger's President Mamadou Tandja on Feb. 24, 2002. "I was asked to impress upon the president the importance that the yellowcake in Niger be under control," Fulford said. "I did that. He assured me. He said the mining operations were handled through a French consortium" and therefore out of the Niger government's control. Owens-Kirkpatrick, reached by phone, declined to comment.

Fulford's impressions, while not conclusive, were similar to those of former ambassador Joseph C. Wilson, who traveled to Niger for the CIA in February 2002 to interview Niger officials about the uranium claim and came away convinced it was not true.

20. This comment takes the cake
"Given the time frame of 16 months ago, information concerning Iraq not obtaining uranium from Niger would not have been as pressing as other subjects,"

Excuse me?? We were fed images of mushroom clouds for MONTHS yet this information that would have dispelled that fear wasn't as "pressing?"

By bet is, with this new information coming to light, Rummy's goin' down!

22. The yellow cake?
Edited on Tue Jul-15-03 03:05 PM by TahitiNut
What this military mind is saying is that they had their hands too full invading Afghanistan to worry about the fraudulent reasons to invade Iraq. (This, of course, is contradicted on its face by the fact that they sent the good general in the first place. IOW, it's a lie.)
