New German Holocaust Memorial Vandalized
:grr: :grr: :grr:

http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20050513/ap_on_re_eu/germany_holocaust_memorial

Within hours of the opening of Germany's national Holocaust memorial to the public, a vandal scratched a swastika into one of the 2,711 gray slabs, a spokesman for the memorial said Friday.

The small swastika was spotted by security guards and quickly removed, though the vandal was not caught, spokesman Uwe Neumaerker said.

"What else can we do?" he said. "There are some security forces and they walk through and if they find something they remove it. ... You can't be everywhere at once."

The Memorial to the Murdered Jews of Europe was officially inaugurated Tuesday after years of debate and delay. It opened to the public Thursday.

7. it was to be expected

In fact it was part of the architect's idea to allow the memorial to be vandalized. To a certain degree I do agree: to claim that all of my countrymen have learned is wishful thinking.

It is a far more powerful heads-up call to us present Germans this way; to see the idiocy still present. And one thing is certain: there is no lack of idiots wanting scratch a Swastika into the memorial.

8. The rise of the European extreme right is worrying me
especially amongst the young at the moment, and even (as in Austria) the main stream. Front nationale in France, Vaams Blokk in Belgium, BNP in Britain. Is it on the rise in Germany do you think.?

Also it seems to have a new enemy this time round. Muslims, and non-white immigrants in general. Is it the same in Germany as in Britain? Do you notice any significant rise?

9. Rise of Christofascism.
Interestingly, many of the rabid parties in question have "Christian" somewhere in their titles. Whether it's the "Christian Democratic Union" in Germany, Christian-Nationalist Party in Poland or any of the numerous "Christian Democratic Party" spawns across Europe, Christofascism is back and its here to stay. Luckily, this new breed of fanatical fascism is nowhere near sophisticated or powerful as the fascism that nearly conquered Europe in 1930s-1940s. They are simply a mass of barely literate pseudo-politicians who are tying, in their minds, to safeguard Europe's innocence. Like all the blood spilled during the last 4000 years of the often gory European history do not count. Much of the blood in question spilled in Christan-on-Christian conflicts.

10. You're right there.
They try to make themselves sound more cuddly and homely with Christian in the title.

Thats not a problem in Britain, because the C of E basically organises village fetes and fairs and bake cookies. Most are quite liberal. Obviously many are not.

But the disaffected young are turning to real old style fascism of the BNP in England. Not in massive numbers but in worrying numbers. They recieved a million votes in the elections for European members of parliament. That would equate to about 5 or 6 million in America so its quite worrying. And they didn't have candidates everywhere so everyone who wanted to vote for them couldn't. The number would have been much bigger. Eastern Europe is also potentially dangerous in terms of the far right. If a bad recession or even depression hits Europe i am very worried as to the politics that will rise up to "save the day". Particularly given Europes susceptibility to extremist politics.

The scapegoats are already being prepared. All anyone talks about at the moment are fucking immigrants, or fucking asylum seekers. There are large numbers coming in but it is wholly exaggerated and fuelled by the right wing media.

I can just feel a serious and damaging deep division opening up across western political discourse. I can almost feel the tension at times and the frustration. Whats it like in US?

11. Whats it like in US you ask?
One word, circus. All rehearsed, all prearranged, all colorful and loud, and completely for the infantile.

I could write a lengthy essay on the often hilariously "theatrical", political scene here, but as you can see from these boards, it is quite surreal.

12. I meant in terms of the rise of far right views
I understand the Christo-fascist element from these boards, but what are the views like amongst the young, the poor, the disenfranchised. In Britain they seem to be getting more and more extreme, and to the right. We've always had an element of it but its on the rise. It also doesn't seem to be balance by the young in the Far left either as has usually been the case. They all just seem to be far right.

15. I don't know
It doesn't seem to be as much a rise in numbers as it is in sophistication. There is a significant number of people harboring extreme right ideas in Germany, but most of those are absorbed by the Christian conservative parties.
The extreme parties have started attempts to get into that group of voters; in Eastern Germany, where the parties aren't as established, they had success.

13. Not suprised. Today, I met a Polish woman who was in a concentration camp
for three years when she was a little girl. I could not imagine that she was old enough but she was. She started crying as she was telling me how there is a disco right across the street from the camp. She was much more bitter about the Poles than the Germans.
