Afghanistan President Hamid Karzai says his Government wants to take control of all Afghan prisoners being held in US military jails. The move follows a wave of violent anti-American protests in which at least 15 people have died over the past five days. The unrest was sparked by allegations that US troops had flushed a copy of the Koran down a toilet at Guantamano Bay.
Mr Karzai says the actions of the United States military in Afghanistan had helped to create a mood of resentment, and his Government is taking steps to exert greater control over US operations. "We are going to ask the US Government to deliver us all our prisoners," Mr Karzai said.
"Afghanistan will have its own facilities, Afghanistan will take care of those prisoners and the coalition must consult and discuss with us the operations that it's doing, it has to be done in accordance with our preferences and loss."
