Lone protester still takes a stand for Terri Schiavo
May 17, 2005

PINELLAS PARK - The sky was still dark Monday as Lisa Wilson walked quickly up 66th Street N toward her destination.

She carried a sign with the words "Terri Schindler was murdered" and a single-minded purpose that even she struggles to explain.

<snip>

Wilson is the last of the hundreds of protesters who trampled the grass outside Terri Schiavo's hospice in the days before her death March 31.

<snip>

Five days a week she arrives at the intersection near Hospice House Woodside at the crack of dawn and holds up her sign hoping to reach the "movers and shakers" whom she thinks travel the roads at this time of day.

<snip>

Her third husband was a child molester who, when she met him, had spent five years in prison for molesting a 9-year-old girl. He killed himself with sleeping pills last July rather than be sent back to prison for trying to lure a 4-year-old out of her yard.

Someone definitely needs to get a life.

1. Truly pathetic. She's obviously got some big problems.
From the article:
Wilson said she'd learned as a dietitian that removing a feeding tube is unethical.

So her first stop was in Tallahassee to urge Gov. Jeb Bush to step in. Her first sign read: "Jeb Bush, are you a man or a mouse?"

Later, her sign read, "Mommy," "Help me," "Pain."

Then, "Terri likes Jello."

And, "American Justice in Crisis."
She'd be better off taking what's left of her $100,000 from her husband's death settlement and investing in psychotherapy. Of course these people are simply not aware they are spinning out of control.

She'll be there until she runs out of money.

24. Wouldn't Terri need to have
the ability to swallow to eat jello? Of course now that she is dead it is a moot point but even when she was still alive, wasn't her brain damage so severe that she had no swallowing reflex?

Second question - were all the Schiavo protesters this stupid? :)

8. It IS Relevant
Such delusional and deluded people don't just appear spontaneously. Examining such a misdirected life can point out where the society is failing in promoting the common welfare. This woman is hurting herself, the family of Terri Shiavo, the greater society. She isn't doing anyone a damn bit of good, other than pointing out a serious problem.

38. You have a thought but just look at the rest of the threads here
no one is feeling for her and talking about how society failed her. They are using the information to mock her or to call her a nut and that is exactly why the author of this story did it. He disagrees with her so he had the staff researcher probably dig up all the dirt she could on her. (Too lazy to do it himself) So he could get the exact result he did. He has made her out to be a total loon and therefore her message is valueless and easily to dismiss. The sad thing is that if she was fighting for a cause the DUers agreed with we would be probably praising her for sticking to her guns even though she has lost.

17. Terri died when her brain did over ten years ago.
All the fuss was over a warmed-over corpse whose organs could have been donated to save others. As for Lisa Wilson, she'd do best to devote herself and her resources to solving her own problems and getting on with her life.

I just want the nutballs in Florida band together to push Jeb out.

They need to be convinced that he's just not dedicated to their cause. Which he's not.

I guess I need to stop making that joke about Jeb letting Terri die. People keep taking me seriously.

7. Why doesn't she work to protect children...
from asshole molesters like her late husband? You know, any woman who KNOWINGLY marries a child molester has to be insane. She knew, so she is just as responsible as he was when he tried to molest again. But NoooOOoooooo, she has to make a 'cause' out of something that is now history, where her actions will absolutely not do anything to change the situation now or in the future.

Is there some unknown brain infection going around this country? It appears to me that mental illness is peaking. Not the Kool-Aid, not Rush, not MSM...because I bet people like her have never even listened to Rush and don't watch CNN or Faux.

"She hadn't been to a church in 25 years until recently. She says she has had an abortion. She has a bachelor's degree in business administration from Washburn University in Topeka and a master's in food and nutrition from Kansas State University. And she maintains that she has never been to a protest in her life - until she showed up 56 days ago.

11. That's dedication
While I don't admire or support (or understand) Lisa Wilson's cause, I admire her dedication whether that dedication is born out of true caring for the cause or mental stress. I've never understood protesters that give up before they accomplish their goal. We might think her means are eccentric or crazy but she's quietly and peacefully exercising her First Amendment rights and for that, I support her.

I would equally admire the person who did the same thing everyday that Lisa Wilson does if that person's sign read "Bush Lied, Thousands Died." But, unfortunately I haven't read about that person in the newspapers. Are they out there and the MSM is ignoring them?

21. You've never heard of an instance of an anti-war protester
being arrested for holding up signs?

Here's a link: http://www.campusantiwar.net/index.php?option=content&task=view&id=63&Itemid=2

On February 23 (2005), an anti-war protestor at UW-Madison was arrested for protesting military recruiters. UW-Madison Stop The War is asking that all those opposed to this gross violation of our freedom of speech and assembly for support.

snip>>

After being told they could not chant, they were allowed to remain holding signs in front to the recruiters table and passing out literature. After roughly 20 minutes they were informed that 7-8 police officers were outside "trying to figure out what to do with ."

snip>>

She was handcuffed and taken away by police officers, none of whom could tell her why she was being arrested. Only at the station was she informed she was receiving a $275 fine for disorderly conduct.

Gee, that was hard to find. :eyes:

who goes to the city park everyday, all day long, to take his position so that he can hold the sky up and allow everyone to live a normal life? I mean, if he didn't go there every morning the sky would fall. Now THAT'S dedication!

16. I don't understand your question.
We can't second guess Lisa Wilson's motivations. All we can assume is that she is a woman who is dedicated to her beliefs. Sure, she might be seriously mentally unstable but I'm not a doctor and sometimes it's tough to tell mentally unstable from crazy devoted.

19. Everyone makes comparisons everyday -
it's the way our brains work (when they're working, at all). You don't have to be a "doctor" to evaluate the behavior of this woman - or of anyone. If this aberrant behavior is her "job", how much is she getting paid and who writes the checks? And if it isn't really "a job", just part of her delusion, then how is she supporting herself? What about all of the many, many cases in this country of individuals who have been removed from life support and feeding tubes not because it is what that individual or his/her family decided, but because the family was too poor to pay for the care? Why doesn't she think those cases are "murder". And why does her sign read "Schindler" and not "Schiavo"? Is this, too, a symptom of her illness? I didn't ask that this woman's illness be paraded to the public - she and the reporter and the editor decided that - and all for each of their own reasons. No, there is nothing to "admire" here, unless you admire a mentally unstable person being used for political purposes, discarded when no longer needed, and then laughed at and pitied by some of the very people who used her. Yeah, on second thought, admiration all around...

23. Good answer.
A tad phony when someone new jumps onto DU just to praise this woman's "dedication" and "carrying out her first amendment rights."

Notice how they didn't jump in to proclaim Newsweek's first amendment rights. And I'd bet money that he would also defend Bob Novak's free speech about Valerie Plame.

26. Right.
Also there is no provision in the First Amendment that says we cannot evaluate what a person says or does while availing themselves of that right. And the mentally ill also are covered by the First Amendment - it doesn't make them sane...
