Backers: We have stem cell votes - Bush veto expected
http://www.suntimes.com/output/news/cst-nws-stem17.html

For years, fertility clinics have been storing thousands of surplus frozen embryos that couples no longer need to get pregnant.

Now a bill that appears close to passage in the U.S. House would allow couples to donate such embryos to federally funded stem cell researchers.

On Monday, three moderate Republicans held a hearing in Chicago on the bill and predicted it will pass when it comes to a vote, probably before Memorial Day.

Because stem cells are extremely adaptable, researchers say they could be used to regenerate tissue and treat such conditions as diabetes, Parkinson's disease and spinal cord injuries.
