Nixon Son-In-Law May Take on Sen. Clinton
Republican Edward Cox, a son-in-law of President Nixon, will soon form an exploratory committee for an expected run against Democratic Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton, a top adviser said Tuesday.

Lynn Mueller, an Albany-based consultant, said the budding campaign has already hired fundraisers and a pollster.

Asked about the chances that Cox will challenge Clinton for re-election in 2006, Mueller said: "It's as close to 100 percent as you can get unless something bizarre happens, which we don't expect."

2. NY Repubs are half-wits. This is proof.
They're going to run a relative of one of the worst-loathed Republicans of all time against the incumbent senator wife of a (still) popular former Dem president, in a solidly Democratic state??

What, Alan Keyes wasn't available?

5. YES! Remind the voters of Nixon! Nixon was clean & liberal compared to *
Compare Nixon to Bush and you will discover that Nixon was more liberal than many modern democrats. In fact, we may discover that Nixon was more liberal than Hillary Clinton. Nixon had the decency to keep religion out of politics, opened doors to talks with our enemies, created the EPA, appointed moderate Supreme Court Justices, etc.

The comparison will shock voters to find out how regressive and back wards this country has become.

7. I think you're right that Nixon had liberal policies, but I wouldn't call
him a liberal. He was a politician who knew which way the wind was blowing--the times were liberal, and he knew to go with what people wanted at the time.

He was about as slimy as you got--if people wanted conecntration camps, he would have gone along with that--no morals, no values, a pig of a human being.

12. I agree - but Nixon and Bush are 2 completely different animals
I think Nixon had an evil side and a good side. Granted, his evil side won out most of the time. But the good side wanted to be remembered as an accomplished American president. So he did things like enact environmental laws and try to find peace with our enemies.

Bush, on the other hand, has no good side. He could care less what history thinks about him. His only authority is either some fundamentalist god figure, or perhaps only the super wealthy.

It amazes me that we have a president that by comparison, makes Nixon look good.

8. I agree with that
I lived through Nixon. Bush with his econ comic, religious, and social agenda is far, far worse than Nixon could ever be. Not long ago I saw a clip of Barry Goldwater's last interview. By today's Republican standards, even HE would be Liberal today.

But as far as any of this mattering in Hillary's Senate run, it won't amount to a can of beans. Rudy, who is VERY LIBERAL on social issues, would still lose to Hillary, let alone Edward Cox, Nixon son-in-law. I voted for Hillary before, and will so again. The New York Republican Party is in shambles and grasping at straws.

13. Yes - I think Cox will lose to Hillary. But, let's bring Nixon back...
...to remind people just how far right our country has become.

Times like this are good to reflect on what our country values. Nixon, Eisenhower, Goldwater, Ford, never brought religion into politics...and I think we should expose that to make people think twice about all the religion that is currently mixed up in the government.

23. Nixon was NOT clean. A lot of the ugly crap we're seeing today ...
... had its ideological origins in the Nixon White House.

It is true that Nixon, currupt lying sack-of-shit that he was, was infinitely more decent than the current gang ... but that's damning with faint praise.

Edited on Tue May-17-05 03:03 PM by loudsue
Well...come to think of it, she would have had more to offer than Pickles. But Trish didn't sell drugs, and pickles did, from what I understand from the postings on the internet. So, bush wouldn't have had as much in common with Trish.

15. He's got nearly Zero Name Recognition on his own...
...they'll have to be beating on the Nixon connection nearly non-stop.

I was around for Nixon's presidency, I remember the Nixon-Cox wedding, and someone would Still Have to remind me who Edward Cox was had I not seen this thread.

He's the Invisible Man.

27. And ironically, Nixon is forever tied to a Cox (amusing history lesson)
Watergate Special Prosecutor Archibald Cox, if you recall.

Nixon ordered Attorney General Elliot Richardson to fire Cox, in an event termed the "Saturday Night Massacre." The man refused to carry out the order and resigned. His assistant, a guy named Ruckelshaus, also refused. The solicitor general, a fellow we all know and loathe, by the name of ROBERT BORK, did the deed.

This generated a wonderful bumper sticker, which was quite scandalous for the day. It read:

IMPEACH THE COX SACKER!

18. Better they should run Julie Nixon Eisenhower.
Or perhaps one of the daughters, when they're of age. I don't know about where they all are on policy, but the women cut striking figures in public.

When Tricia and Eddie tied the knot.

A heart-shaped lollipop.

It was called the Tricia Nixon Cox Sucker.
