Jane Fonda Film Banned From Ky. Theaters
Jane Fonda Film Banned From Ky. Theaters

Tuesday, May 17, 2005

(05-17) 16:47 PDT Elizabethtown, Ky. (AP) --

The owner of two Kentucky theaters has refused to show the new Jane Fonda film "Monster-in-Law" because of the activist role the actress took during the Vietnam War.

Ike Boutwell, who trained pilots during the Vietnam War, displayed pictures of Fonda clapping with a North Vietnamese anti-aircraft crew in 1972 outside the Elizabethtown Movie Palace to show his disapproval. The marquee outside Showtime Cinemas in nearby Radcliff reads: "No Jane Fonda movie in this theater."

Both theaters are just a few miles from the Army post of Fort Knox, south of Louisville.

"I think when people do something, they need to be held responsible for their actions," Boutwell said. "When you give the enemy aid, it makes the war last longer."

The woman has apologized, as if that mattered to you. While I think anything that limits the distribution of a shitty Hollywood product has a certain amount of merit, I have to wonder at the mentality behind this move. Actually, I don't wonder; I know it. Asswipes.

Note - this is not a slam on all Christians, just this particular brand.

I love it! Somebody needs to start a website that quantifies the stupidity of these people and charts it.

And On Topic: Get a freakin' life people. It happened nearly forty years ago -- how many of us would like to be held responsible for the stupid shit we did when we were twenty years old? Thank God for the statute of limitations!

In both Kansas and Florida, it is government entities doing stupid stuff, this is just one stupid guy and his business. Kentucky will have to work harder if it wants in the Stupid State Derby.

Think of Austin as something like Hong Kong before China took it over, or West Berlin surrounded by East Germany: an island community. I don't leave this county very often, unless it's on an airpalne to the west coast or the northeast.

86. "Another step down the road to fascism"?
Please! You're telling me that a business-owner exercising his right to free speech, by not showing a film with an actor in it he despises, is a "step towards fascism"? Give me a break. You have a distorted idea of what constitutes fascism. I swear, that word is thrown around on this site a ridiculous amount.

I'll tell you whats fascist. Suggesting that Democrats should consider "banning the GOP", and whats even scarier is the idea is getting a warm reception here.

78. Minor tangential niggle...
While Kentucky is certainly home to many regressive, "unsophisticates," you won't find too many Kentuckians pining for the Confederacy. The state was neutral, with more "official" resources (those brokered by the state government) going to the Union effort, at least after Bragg's failed Confederate invasion of 1862. I know you were just joking, but we Kentuckians have enough baggage to deal with (much of it well-earned) without being equated with Johnny Reb revisionists. ;-)
All that being said, this dude deserves a huge heaping of snark, so blast away!

Too bad, isn't it Ike? People like Jane Fonda raising public awareness about the immoral/unjust basis of that war. Probably helped to save thousands of American lives and millions of innocent Vietnamese in the process by bringing that sorry chapter of American history to a close. But you'll never understand that Ike, cuz I'll bet you never met a war that didn't get you excited.

61. Very lame
The right wing is a broken record. They ignore the fact that LBJ and Nixon administration kept the horrible war going all those years. All they can do is blame a celebrity that has no affect on national or international policy whatsoever. This is like people saying that Michael Moore's 2003 Oscar speech against the war hurts the troops, or that recent Newsweek article got soldiers killed. People need to wake up and realize the thing that threaten the troops the most are the ones who send them off to danger.

Der Krieg ist ENDE!!!

everytime I hear one of these misfits going off about "Hanoi Jane", I hear 2 things in my mind, Former U-Boat Ace Erich Topp saying "Yesterday's Enemies are Today's FRIENDS", and that song "Still in Saigon"...

Bet the loser didn't show "Farenheirt 911", either.

And if he's a hot-shot "topgun" instructor, why is he shoveling trampled popcorn off the floor for a living?
Could it be that he was a REMF, and never WENT?

Or when it when hits cable.

J-Lo makes my ass hurt, too.

I also will say that Jane Fonda is one of America's greatest living movie actresses. I think there is a generation or two unaware of how talented she is.

Start with "Klute".

Edited to ask: do you know when "Wanda Does It" is returning to Comedy central?

"I think when people do something, they need to be held responsible for their actions," Boutwell said. "When you give the enemy aid, it makes the war last longer."

Bush has never been held responsible for anything he's done in his entire pathetic life.

And what do you call it when your family is such good friends with the wealthiest financiers of global terrorism that your own dad was in a business deal with Osama's relative at the very moment America was attacked. But you not only shill for them ... you hold hands and kiss them.

If I'm not mistaken, JF recently offered an apology for her actions.
But the fundies and repugs have no sense of forgiveness for their enemies. They can always forgive rush, bennett, *, newt but never one of us. hatred lasts forever in their cold hard little hearts.

79. Being from Kentucky, things like this always make me cringe...
...But you have to understand the nature of the people that live in and around the Elizabethtown/Fort Knox area- which is about 40 minutes from Louisville. A good number of them are former/retired military who have very strong feelings about what she did/didn't do. Don't just write off all people from Kentucky as being inbred rednecks whose family tree more closely resembles a wreath. Most of you are much smarter than that.

It's situated in a dry county very near the border it shares with the wettest county (Jefferson, also known as Louisville Metro) in Kentucky. Tiny little Southern Baptist churches abound, as do trailer parks. It doesn't surprise me one bit that the local movie theaters are wont to making political statements from time to time.

Edited on Wed May-18-05 02:39 PM by FrankieBud
when she went to Hanoi. I know that she apologized for that. She was wrong to apologize. It was an illegal war against the people of Vietnam.
We can try to rewrite history all that we like, but the truth is the best history. We slaughtered millions of people and lost that war.
I can still respect the kids who fought and died there and also have respect for the Americans like Jane and I who formed a resistance against that war.
I don't even have to guess as to the political agenda of the Kentucky theater people. They are following the neocon agenda.
