AFGHAN GUANTANAMO PRISONER ALLEGES QURAN DESECRATION

ISLAMABAD (AFP) - An Afghan who spent three years at Guantanamo Bay prison said on Tuesday that interrogators at the center frequently desecrated the Quran, which prompted a hunger strike and a US apology.

Abdul Rahim, 40, said during an interview on AVT Khyber television, a Pashtu-language private channel, that abuse of the holy book was routine.

“Abuse of the Quran was done routinely particularly in the early days of detention,” Rahim said. His claims could not be independently verified.

“They would throw the holy book on the ground, trample upon it and tell the prisoner under interrogation no one could stop them from doing that.

“The news of sacrilege sent shockwaves among the prisoners and all of us went on a hunger strike.

2. Ex-Guantanamo detainee confirms Qur’an desecration
we should all send this to newsweek)

An Afghan ex-Guantanamo detainee confirmed on Tuesday that U.S. interrogators at the prison have repeatedly desecrated the Qur’an, which prompted a hunger strike and a U.S. apology.
In an interview on AVT Khyber television, Abdul Rahim said that abuse of the holy book was routine at Guantanamo Bay.

“Abuse of the Qur’an was done routinely particularly in the early days of detention,” Rahim said. “They would throw the holy book on the ground, trample upon it and tell the prisoner under interrogation no one could stop them from doing that. “The news of sacrilege sent shockwaves among the prisoners and all of us went on a hunger strike.

3. Let's see Bush get a retraction from them
Edited on Tue May-17-05 08:44 PM by Gman
The Newsweek retraction doesn't matter. Everyone knows Newsweek was pressured to retract. The thought of the desecration of the Quran seems completely plausible to everyone. And now, a UAE news source publishes a similar story.

No one is being fooled by NW's retraction into thinking the whole thing never happened, unless they want to be, like Freepers.

On edit...

and nominated!

4. The Khaleej Times is a respectable paper and this is an AFP story

which gives it credibility. And, it should travel FAR....AFP is used extensively in the ME and the Central Asia media that I look at...like the Jordan Times, the News International (Pakistan), etc.

The KT is based in the UAE, one of our major oil buddies. So, it's great that this was published there.

The UAE has been worried lately about terrorist attacks--there have been some incidents.
The head of state wanted to give the vote to women but had been stymied by the conservatives in the Parliament...but it finally happened.

5. You're right. In a way, Washington's overheated response
is going to backfire on them. The stupid fools thought they could talk their way out of it. The fact is: the story is true. There is no doubt in my mind that the US did this. Consider what they did at Abu Ghraib. This is nothing, in their minds. They can't understand what all the fuss is about, since they value nothing except money.

I think it's great that they're making such a big deal about it. Because it will only draw more attention to this issue. A very smart man named Shakespeare knew this several hundred years ago. He said, "methinks the lady protesteth too much".

6. It is possible that he was one of the sources. Those Islamists have
their own propaganda.

We don't know.
