Trump Sounds Off on World Trade Center

To Donald Trump, the proposals for the replacement for the World Trade Center look like a junkyard. His solution? Rebuild the twin towers, more or less.

Standing in the lobby of his Trump Tower on Fifth Avenue, the developer turned TV star on Wednesday presented a model of his own envisioned towers, reflecting the original shape of the skyscrapers that fell Sept. 11, 2001.

The towers he advocates would be 111 stories tall — one floor taller than the lost towers.

Plans for the site, to be dominated by a 1,776-foot Freedom Tower, have been stalled lately because of security concerns, though Gov. George Pataki assured New Yorkers last week that the project was not losing momentum.

Personally, I think this is a great idea, the "finalized" Freedom Tower design has never been visually appealing to me. And don't even get me started on the Orwellian name.

1. I mean no disrespect
But I always thought the Twin Towers were among the most bland, boring, and somewhat unattractive buildings that I had ever seen. I'm for any design that looks different from the upended cracker boxes proposed.

5. I thought the same when they were first built
but I really came to love the site of them in the New York skyline. No way in HELL though do I believe they should be replicated - it's just not a good idea.

8. they were horrible

I remember my visit there very clearly. It was a kind of multistory white collar sweatshop with Home Depot store architecture. A warehouse of people pushing pieces of paper and taking commissions on that.

Maybe that's the epitome of New York City, but somehow building the same thing- just higher- isn't a defeating of the terrorists' actions and beliefs at all. It's a pretended sanctification and glorification of a certain kind of miniondom and mediocrity that makes up in expanse what it doesn't have in character. It's "Metropolis", really.

I think it would be a victory if New York decided to build average sized, good looking, buildings on the site. But it would not be New Yorkerish in 2005 to choose to be humble, to overcome an insult, to correct rather than garishly embellish the problem of global corporate capitalist arrogance and social nonresponsibility the WTC stood for even in the eyes of normal Americans.

13. Agreed. But the hypocrisy of this is that Trump himself said that he

he thought the WTC were ugly structures and he was glad the buildings were gone.

I remember this well as he said it within a month after 9-11 and I couldn't get over how inappropriate the comment was, especially the timing of it.

Plus, the timing of today's announcement could be due to the fact that next Tuesday ABC is going to run a very unflattering movie about what a declasse individual and megalomaniac Trump really is.

3. hmm...
I'm no Trump fan, but the Trump International Hotel & Tower that's going to be build in Chicago looks mighty nice, at least to me:

15. That looks out of place in Chicago
That cool blue glass look seems more appropriate for fitting in the Minneapolis skyline than being sandwiched in between the darkness of the Sears and Hancock towers in Chicago.

12. Would you work in them? I would not.
But then I always thought the towers unsafe because of their poor air circulation.

14. working/not working
would have nothing to do with aesthetics. ANY building there will have a stigma, an "unluckyness."

7. Do nothing.
Why put anything there. It just seems like a greedy enterprise all around -- an excuse for developers to make money.

Make it a park.

10. I agree with Trump

put 'em back the way they were.

Everytime I see an old movie with the New York skyline, it reminds me how much they dominated the New York skyline. Yeah, they were plain boxes, but there was two of them. It was the fact that they were twins that caught the eye.

:toast:

I saw this on the local news tonight and I heard Trump say this about the Freedom Tower:

"It is the worst pile of crap architecture I've ever seen in my life."

16. What a publicity whore

It would be a shame if the plans to build the freedom tower are scrapped. I was looking forward to seeing its modern and ethereal facade come to life.

It doesn't seem right to me to rebuild the World Trade Center Towers so close to how they once were. It smacks of emotionalism to try to replace something that is gone and that can not truly be replaced.

But - I guess the upside is that people wouldn't feel queasy about seeing images in old films of the Pre 9/11 NY Skyline. They could look to NY's rebuilt skyline to be coddled -- encouraged to forget what happened and how George W. Bush bush twisted all of the tragedy for political gain and to how he used a pack of lies to send us to war.

1,600+ Americans dead. 15,000 injured. 100,000 innocent Iraqis dead. A massive, mind boggling deficient. These are also the legacy of George W. Bush's bastardization of our ideals after 9/11.

17. Rebuild -- with a little religious insurance against Jihadists...
I'm a New Yorker. I miss the Towers. A lot of New Yorkers do -- does anyone else here remember the high dudgeon in which the Rupe York Post indulged when their own poll of designs showed, if I am not mistaken, more than 50% wanted the towers rebuilt?

I'm shocked to find myself siding with the Donald. I say if there's a way to do it without couvering the footprints of the original towers, do it.

And to send an extra-special message to Islamist thugs, I have a novel idea: each of the towers should have consecrated houses of worship for Christians, Jews, Muslims and other religions built into one of the top floors.

Got that, Osama? So you want to destroy a mosque? That should bring down a fatwa or two on his thuggish head...

18. I agree. I remember feeling bad because the buildings were
gone. I always thought they were cool: two identical rectangular prisms with little adornment.

I don't know if putting a mosque on top of each tower would deter the terrorists. But hopefully the engineers and architects will make sure that the new towers aren't vulnerable to structural failure from a fire.
