ACLU asks for jail for Tangipahoa (LA) school officials
ACLU asks jail for Tangipahoa school officials

Teachers and administrators in Tangipahoa Parish continue to violate a court-imposed school prayer ban, according to the ACLU, which Wednesday asked a federal judge to send them to jail.

For the fourth time in less than two months, the ACLU has formally notified the judge that school officials are flouting the prayer ban, imposed to settle a lawsuit the civil liberties group filed for a parent in 2003.

This time, the group says, an elementary school teacher in Tangipahoa Parish repeatedly held prayers in her fourth grade class, encouraged students to bring their Bibles to school, held Bible study classes in the cafeteria of D.C. Reeves Elementary School, and admonished students who didn't show up for the class.

In addition, the ACLU cites a prayer it says was recently given at Amite High School, over a loudspeaker, at an awards banquet. The prayer ended with the words "In Jesus' name we pray," violating the ban; the principal of the school sat silently by.

Wednesday's filing is the latest skirmish in a decade-long battle between the ACLU here and school authorities in the rural parish north of Lake Pontchartrain over the place of religion in the classroom. The group contends parish school officials systematically flout the Constitution's Establishment Clause forbidding the mixing of government and religion.

1. Good point Maddy!
These people are flagrantly disregarding court orders. They don't seem to believe in the separation of church and state, and from what I can tell, the people of the community are behind them. I've seen bumper stickers down here saying that prayer should always be a part of our schools.

Then, coincidentally, a minister and sherrif's deputy are arrested for allegedly raping youths AND animals at a Tangipahoa church. Everyone is just shocked that a "man of god" and a law enforcement official would do something like that.

4. They CAN pray...
in a public school. Kids can pray together in their free time or they can pray quietly by themselves, Only thing they can't do is have the school sponsor the prayer.

The peculiar brand of Xianity practiced by (far too) many people in this country apparently needs unanimity in prayer, coercion of the nonbelievers, and lots of "show" in the prayers - so that others can see how "holy" they are.

History books of the future are going to have whole chapters about how the US fell because of the rise of the Christian Occult... and Imperialism, of course.

5. I'm sure those kids are praying NOT to go to
the Hosanna church! Really, I hope the ACLU stops the illegal proceedings in the schools and that the prosecutors stop the horrible sexual torture of children in those schools. We sure love those Christian values - defy the law and rape the children and animals because they God on their side.
