Bush condemns Korean stem cell research
President says will veto legislation to ease U.S. restrictionsThe Associated Press

Updated: 11:27 a.m. ET May 20, 2005

WASHINGTON - President Bush on Friday said he would veto legislation that would loose restrictions on embryonic stem cell research and expressed concern about human cloning research in South Korea.

“I’m very concerned about cloning,” the president said. “I worry about a world in which cloning becomes accepted.”

White House deputy press secretary Trent Duffy said the work in South Korea amounted to human cloning for the sole purpose of scientific research. “The president is opposed to that,” Duffy said. “That represents exactly what we’re opposed to.”

.....

“I made very clear to Congress that the use of federal money, taxpayer’s money, to promote science which destroys life in order to save life — I’m against that,” Bush said. “Therefore, if the bill does that, I would veto it.”

27. Stupider and Stupider
As a scientist and thinking human being, I cannot fathom how incredibly deceptive or stupid Dubya is. Day by day the theocratic radical right is trying to diminish the contributions of science.

Maybe all of these idiots should move to their own 'thought-free' geographic zone, where they can continuously devolve into superstitious, sub-humans... perhaps a large area of Texas.... or within non-coastal Florida....

Edited on Fri May-20-05 10:49 AM by ET Awful
is fine. Killing innocent Afghanis to save innocent Afghanis is fine. Destroying Social Security to save Social Security is fine. Destroying the Constitution to save our democracy is perfectly okay.

But, utilizing cells from cloned sources that would never be viable as individual living creatures to find new ways to advance medicine and save countless lives is wrong.

I'm glad you showed me the light.

8. Tin Foil alert?
I recently read that Australia is in the process of building one of the largest stem-cell research facilities in the world (anyone remember this article?). I discussed this with a few people at work and we felt that this was pay-back to Australia for sending troops to Iraq; that the thugs were planning on outsourcing our research to OZ,i.e., keep the research going, just not here. I felt a bit nutty suggesting this, but that's where my head is right now.

The Korean research and breakthroughs are huge to the future of their economy, as I understand it. This could put them at the forefront of this science.

Bush: I'll Veto Stem Cell Legislation

Friday May 20, 2005 5:01 PM

By TERENCE HUNT AP White House Correspondent

WASHINGTON (AP) - President Bush on Friday said he would veto legislation that would loosen restrictions on embryonic stem cell research and expressed deep concern about human cloning research in South Korea.

<snip>White House deputy press secretary Trent Duffy said the work in South Korea amounted to human cloning for the sole purpose of scientific research. ``The president is opposed to that,'' Duffy said. ``That represents exactly what we're opposed to.'' <snip>

The president also threatened a veto of legislation that would clear the way for taxpayer money to be spent on embryonic stem cell research.

A measure by Reps. Mike Castle, R-Del., and Diana DeGette, D-Colo., would lift Bush's 2001 ban on the use of federal dollars for research using any new embryonic stem cell lines. <snip>

This is America. This is supposed to be democracy, where church does not rule the country. Catholic church has too much influence on the government. People gotta realize that earth is not the center of the universe and that progress requires funding. Bush has no right to deny people progress. We are already have to put of with 8 years of this dumby. Religion has no place in the White House!!!!!!!! Just when I though Bush couldn't get any dumber, he proved me wrong! :kick:

It is about time he took a stand against the death penalty

Oh wait, killing people with a scientific methods such as the gas chamber, lethal injection, etc. who killed other people because they cannot be "rehabilitated" and are a danger to society if they were to leave prison is OKAY by him.

The problem BUSH has is using left over embreos created for in-vitro fertilization (THAT WOULD OTHERWISE BE DESTROYED) to test new science . . .

What a complete and total moran. Will the news media show this paradox? Oh they had better not or they'll be under fire for mispelling embryo. . .

42. RE: Stem cell advances
What I find really sad is that, ignoring the ethics of this issue, such medical research as this can e a powerful driver of the economy as it sparks innovation and new forms of work and technology (which equates to manufacturing the equipment and supplies needed to produce this kind of scientific research). By ignoring this type of research, Congress essentially abdicates all the potential earnings which this research generates, earnings which could be infused into an American economy in need to assistance.

What do you think of President Bush's position on stem cell research?

51. These are not even fertilized eggs
"Hwang and his colleagues do not use surplus test-tube embryos to create their stem-cell lines. Instead, they employ a cloning technique known as somatic-cell nuclear transfer. In this process, the nucleus from an unfertilized donor egg cell is replaced with nuclear material from a different kind of cell. Then the egg is processed with electricity and chemicals, coaxing it to grow to the blastocyst stage."
