Vatican Says Mexican Priest Will Not Face Abuse Trial
http://www.nytimes.com/2005/05/22/international/europe/22pope.html

ROME, May 21 - The founder of an influential Roman Catholic order in Mexico will not face a church trial on longstanding allegations that he molested teenagers, a Vatican spokesman said on Saturday.

In December, the Vatican opened a full-scale investigation into the Rev. Marcial Maciel Degollado, the 85-year-old founder of the Legionaries of Christ and a prominent religious figure in Mexico. At least eight people came forward in the late 1990's to accuse him of abusing them between 1943 and the early 1960's.

But on Saturday, the Rev. Ciro Benedettini, the spokesman, said that no charges would be brought against Father Maciel. He did not say why the investigation was ended.

"There is no investigation now, and it is not foreseeable that there will be another investigation in the future," Father Ciro said by telephone. snip

In 1994, in a trip to Mexico, Pope John Paul II called him "an efficacious guide to youth" - a statement that several victims said prompted them to make complaints.

1. Welcome to the world of the new Pope Benedict
Not even the pretense that justice for those who have been abused will be in order. It certainly re-affirms his position from when he dictated that the abuses were to be secret and blamed the media for their coverage.

3. Yaas, Just Another Folder in the "Secret Archives"
Pope Ratso was the head of the formerly-named "Inquisition" office.

Vatican Secret Archives
In any case, records of clerical hijinks were kept in the secret archives of the diocese, which even now is mandated by Canon Law. <1> The Vatican also has its own Secret Archives (their unashamed, actual name), which are as vast as they are old. Headed by a cardinal like the Vatican Library, another rumored storehouse of secrets, they partially open today to a few approved scholars who are let in only with specific purposes and with permission of the Pope.

It is the most mysterious institution in the papal city, for in its more than thirty miles of shelving are reputed to be the accumulated records of scandals, secrets, and revelations of the most shocking and explosive kind, blithely boxed and filed away with the insouciance born of centuries of silence and discretion.<2> (Emphasis added.)

The Secret Archives are so vast, disorganized, and secret that no one even knows their full extent — one expert claims that there are “only” 24 miles or so of shelves. She says that there are 135 fondi, or individual archives. These include not only records of papal decrees, chancery business, and the like, but much other material, including the records of prominent papal families, suppressed religious orders and monasteries, and those of nunciatures, or church embassies. Most of this has never been examined, much less indexed and cataloged. ....

6. Oh, why do you all bash the catholic church!
(sarcasm off)

Never mind that these are all true, and they are a bunch of inexcusable scumbags - but they are "catholics" and some on DU will never admit to justified outrage and disgust many of us here feel towards our former church.

May they all rot in their vision of hell for their crimes and those who condone and make excuses for it all.

I just want to know how come all the other fundy religios clergy have gotten a pass on bad press, and it only seems to be the catholic church that is exposed? I would bet my life and all I have that the protestant churches, especially the fundy ones, are 100 times more corrupt and criminal - especially in regards to child predators.

Go figure.

10. Like you, I want to know why the media hasn't spent the time reporting

on sex crimes by Protestant and Jewish clergy that they have on reporting the sins of Catholic priests. There are pedophiles in every line of work, and most employers tend to try to avoid disgrace by covering up/ hushing up employee crimes.

FWIW, I do admit that the "outrage and disgust towards (y)our former church" exists for you and others here and may be well-justified. (I say "may" because it's been my experience that some Catholics who've left the Church have a grievance list that's rather petty. Of course now they have pedophilia in the priesthood to carry on about, but it's interesting that in decades of listening to "recovering Catholics" piss and moan about how mean the sisters in their parochial school were, what a hypocrite their priest was, or how ridiculous some beliefs were, I never heard a word about a priest molesting anyone. Interesting, no?)

I'm sorry that you felt you had to leave the Church and hope you're happier now. I left the Presbyterian Church, which has its share of hypocritical clergy and ridiculous beliefs, after I was out of my parents' home and, decades later, became Catholic. But I've always thought I was born Catholic in a Protestant family, so it stands to reason that many people born into Catholic families weren't born to be Catholic. We all have to find our own way in life; sometimes it goes along with our parents' way, but often it doesn't.

Peace be with you. O8)

9. Legionaries of Christ
Edited on Sun May-22-05 10:04 PM by CatholicEdHead
have been banned in the St. Paul/Minneapolis Diocese. They are similar to the ultra-traditionalist Opus Dei which has Benedict's ear.

Here is their web site:

There seems to be a quasi-cultish feel to this sect.

Here is more on the banning in the St. Paul/Mpls diocese:

11. Watched "Our Fathers" last night on Showtime
Edited on Sun May-22-05 10:27 PM by Catt03
It was devastating. Not a bash Catholic movie but the truth about Cardinal Law and the Boston Diocese sexual abuse scandal.

SYNOPSIS:
"Newsweek" editor David France's book of the same name is the basis for this original drama that examines the Roman Catholic Church sexual abuse scandal and cover-up. Dan Curtis ("The Winds of War") directs this searing indictment of those who attempted to conceal the crimes, as well as a heartbreaking portrait of the victims haunted for years by the secrets they carried within. Daniel Baldwin, Ted Danson, James Oliver and Christopher Plummer star in this explosive indictment of a system in chaos.

I suggest watching it if you can stomach it; just so we never let anything happen like this again
