Democracy protests in four Nepali cities

KATHMANDU - More than 4,000 protesters have taken to the streets of several cities in Nepal demanding the restoration of the country's elected parliament.

An alliance of seven political parties, including the Nepali Congress and the Communist Party of Nepal (CPN) organized the demonstrations, which took place in Kathmandu, Biratnagar, Janakpur and Pokhara. <snip>

The largely peaceful rallies defied a Saturday warning from the government stating it would not tolerate anti-royal declarations. Demonstrators shouted slogans such as "Down with the autocratic regime."

CPN officials say police have detained nearly two dozen activists, including a member of the upper house of parliament.
