Byrd faces a fight in ’06 — if he runs
http://www.wvgazette.com/section/News/2005052226?pt=0

Nationally, Robert C. Byrd may wear a Republican bulls-eye — the senator atop the GOP’s electoral hit list for 2006. But in Sophia, the town of 1,301 he left for Congress some 52 years ago, he is still very much the favorite son.

“He’s always trying to help us out,” said Shawn Stines, a 26-year-old mechanic, as he stuffed a dryer at the Sophia Laundromat. “I like him. He’s a good guy.”

Outside Priddy’s Hardware Store, 64-year-old Frances Meredith is even more emphatic.

1. No way
He's a god in WV. He's porked over so much cash in federal projects and created so many jobs that he will be there for a while longer, and a good thing too.

That man has brought in almost as much money to West Virginia over the years as the Bush team has given to Halliburton.

7. He is a most valuable member of congress. We can't lose him especially
to a Sean Hannity vendetta.

10. Like all elections in the US, it depends on the voting machines.
If WV doesn't make use of them, his chances are good to remain. If the central tabulators are used to count the votes and the Repubs decide they want him out, the people behind the machines, the Urosevich brothers, et al., will get rid of him. Simple as that.

People will act stunned, the exit polls will say that he won by 20% margin, but everybody will just shake their head and move on.

11. Speaking of Senator Byrd
does anyone know if there is a way to get a DVD of his speeches? I know there are several of them I could listen to over and over.
