LOS ANGELES May 23, 2005 — Howard Morris, best known for playing poetry-spouting hillbilly Ernest T. Bass on the "Andy Griffith Show," died at his home in the Hollywood section of Los Angeles. He was 85.

I haven't watched that show in years. It's a good show, but kind of Red Statish.

was he a republican? actually i could care less about his politics,he created one of the most popular characters on one of the best tv programs ever and his other tv and movie stuff is not shabby..ernest t bass- rest in peace.

11. Greatest. TV. Show. Ever.
Howard Morris may have directed several episodes, but the five in which he played Ernest T. Bass are jewels. I read yesterday that he had almost no idea of how the character would sound or move until the cameras started rolling, at which point he just "took off."

For my money, the best Ernest T performance was where he "tuned" a gasoline can and began spouting poetry while he drummed on it. It may well have been the first Rap performance ever recorded.

"If I'd knowed you was comin'
Here's what I'd do:
I'd a riz both arms
And wove at you!"
