TV presenter 'groped' by Schwarzenegger may sue

California election: Three more women come forward to add to tide of harassment allegations against actor-turned-politician

By James Morrison and Andrew Gumbel in Bakersfield, California

05 October 2003

The British television presenter who alleges she was sexually harassed by Arnold Schwarzenegger in a London hotel is threatening to sue him for libel over his claim that she invented the incident.

Close friends of Anna Richardson say she is furious that Schwarzenegger aides, in attempting to shore up his support ahead of Tuesday's recall election for California governor, briefed against her. The movie star's spin-doctors claimed that, far from having her breasts groped against her will, Ms Richardson invited him to examine them.

Ms Richardson's threat came as three more women stepped forward to add to the tide of sexual allegations facing Mr Schwarzenegger.

<snip>

getting sued imediately after entering office? poor arnie!

1. She can sue for slander, not for libel
Edited on Sat Oct-04-03 07:47 PM by IndianaGreen
Essentially slander is when someone tells another person something that is knowingly false for the purpose of injuring someone else's reputation or livelihood.

Libel is when the same false information is published or broadcast.

Generally one sues a person for slander, and the press for libel.

Since this is in England, the laws are different over there. I understand that it is easier to win over there in cases in which public officials have sued publications for libel.

3. The reports were published and broadcast
In a press release and by Arnold's spokesperson. Don't forget, Richardson is in England. If she decides to sue, the burden of proof will be on Arnold, not on her.

I hope she does sue. She recounted her story in the 2001 Premiere article "Arnold the Barbarian" and Arnold said nothing. The only difference is that now he's running for office and has to lie to discredit her. I believe she had witnesses on her staff who saw the entire thing.

4. I believe it was Demi Moore who won a lawsuit against a tabloid
and it was easier to win in the UK than in the US (it was one of Murdoch's rags if I remember right). Perhaps one of our UK friends will enlighten us about this.

8. The law is very different there
Their slander and libel laws make the accused party responsible for proving their defense. The accusation is presumed true until the accused can prove otherwise.

13. Liberace won a lawsuit over there
Early in his career he sued a gossip columnist for insinuating he was gay. He claimed he was "all man" and won. I guess that's one reason why he had to keep up the pretense for the rest of his life.

10. I love the British press!

Sheryl Main, a Hollywood publicist who was with the actor during Ms Richardson's interview with him, insisted the presenter approached him, cupped her right breast and said: "What do you think of these?"

Ms Richardson has told friends that she may sue Mr Schwarzenegger and/or his aides for accusing her of lying.

Since her allegations re-emerged on Thursday, the glamorous but, until now, little-known presenter has been bombarded with interview requests from media outlets around the world. Currently on holiday with her partner, Ms Richardson is understood to have been negotiating to sell her story to a British tabloid.

If nothing else, having a recall election with over 100 candidates that include a porn star and a porn peddler, speaks volumes as to what a circus this entire affair has turned out to be.

11. I hope she sues
I also hope she sues the woman KCBS just now showed on their 6pm broadcast telling a story about Richardson being the instigator. She claimed Richardson said "What do you think of these?" to Arnold. I didn't catch her name. Linda Alvarez was one of the newscasters.

Did anyone else see this? KCBS...channel 2...L.A.

12. if you read the article referenced, you'll see that quote in there.

While he was quick to admit to having "behaved badly" towards some women in the past, his campaign managers denied these included Ms Richardson. Sheryl Main, a Hollywood publicist who was with the actor during Ms Richardson's interview with him, insisted the presenter approached him, cupped her right breast and said: "What do you think of these?"

it doesn't matter. what matters is whether he lied about what happened, which he may well have done.

14. Let's get those recall petitions ready.
If the Predator starts getting sued or criminaly prosecuted for being a pervert, than it's time to recall the predator. As soon as he takes office, all we have to get is a handfull of votes to get another recall election going.

Let's recall the Predator when we recall Bushinator. Huge dem sweep next year. Let's take this country back from the crooks.

15. I can't wait to hear the repuke spin
that Ahh-nold shouldn't be sued while he's in office because it would "detract from his duties and his running the state." Remember when they were all hot to trot to have Paula Jone's sexual harassment case go forward during his presidency, as well as the whole Monica mess? They very piously proclaimed that "no one was above the law" and that Paula deserved her day in court ASAP, etc., etc.

Well, now they're circling the wagons for Arnie and it's absolutely sickening.

17. RECALL ARNIE!
Let's get started, election day isn't too early to start collecting names! Get the names of people who want him recalled and call them back for their official signature when the real petition starts.
