G.O.P. Senator Sends Letter to Colleagues Opposing Bolton - NYT

In the letter, Mr. Voinovich said that while he had been "hesitant to push my views on my colleagues" during his years in the Senate, he felt "compelled to share my deep concerns" about Mr. Bolton's nomination.

"In these dangerous times, we cannot afford to put at risk our nation's ability to successfully wage and win the war on terror with a controversial and ineffective ambassador to the United Nations," Mr. Voinovich wrote. He urged colleagues to "put aside our partisan agenda and let our consciences and our shared commitment to our nation's best interests guide us."

2. Wow, maybe Mr. V is really serious about this?
I had thought he was just grandstanding for the folks back home, or possibly trying to wrangle some plum from the Repub leadership by 'playing hard to get'.

Could he actually be going to make a decision based on facts and reason?
Has the world gone topsy-turvy?

4. Good for Senator Voinovich!
From the article:
Mr. Voinovich, a former mayor of Cleveland and governor of Ohio, previously described his decision to oppose Mr. Bolton's nomination as one that was based on conscience. In his letter to colleagues, he repeated a statement made earlier this month to the Foreign Relations Committee, in which he questioned whether Mr. Bolton would "have the character, leadership, interpersonal skills, self-discipline, common decency and understanding of the chain of command to lead his team to victory."
What on earth is he doing in the Republican Party? The personality he describes as Bolton's, sounds distinctly Republican to me!

Now that he's taking a stronger stand, will others join him?

Let us pray.

The phony War on Terra rose up and bit Bush on the butt:

In these dangerous times, we cannot afford to put at risk our nation's ability to successfully wage and win the war on terror with a controversial and ineffective ambassador to the United Nations,"

ROTFL. This is toooooo precious.

17. Voinovich is such a transparent stupid liar. Our war crimes have not
and will not ever have anything to do with the war on terror. Bu$h is the most dangerous terrorist in the world. Hands down. What is he going to do to stop that maggot? Whine about how bad Bolton is? The rest of the world knows we are out of control. He is wasting his time trying to reach out to the lemmings.

Republican asks senators to reject Bolton
Ohio's Voinovich calls U.N. nominee ‘controversial, ineffective’

Updated: 7:27 p.m. ET May 24, 2005

WASHINGTON - The maverick Republican who denied President Bush’s U.N. nominee a smooth sail through the GOP-led Senate asked colleagues Tuesday to vote against a “controversial and ineffective ambassador.”

The Senate is expected to vote on John R. Bolton’s nomination before leaving for a Memorial Day break, and Republicans said they are confident he will be confirmed.

The vote would end weeks of wrangling over whether Bolton mistreated co-workers or took liberties with government intelligence.

“In these dangerous times, we cannot afford to put at risk our nation’s ability to successfully wage and win the war on terror with a controversial and ineffective ambassador to the United Nations,” Sen. George Voinovich, R-Ohio, wrote to all 99 other senators. “I worry that Mr. Bolton could make it more difficult for us to achieve the important U.N. reforms needed to restore the strength of the institution.”

21. Steve Clemons
our most informative guy on Bolton says:

"There are fundamental issues unresolved in the Bolton Battle.

First, the administration has defied Congress in failing to provide the controversial and important "unedited" NSA intercepts which Bolton requested during his tenure.

Secondly, there are rumors that the Senate Select Committee on Intelligence is actually investigating Bolton's use of this NSA intercept material and attempting to ascertain whether Bolton compromised national security by mishandling and inappropriately using the intelligence information he gathered from these intercepts. It is remarkable that the Senate would consider a vote on any nomination in which there was such a major outstanding concern.

So, the vote grows close. . .perhaps."

22. G.O.P. Senator (Voinovich) Issues Letter Urging Vote Against Bolton
By DOUGLAS JEHL
NY Times
Published: May 25, 2005

WASHINGTON, May 24 - The Ohio Republican whose opposition to John R. Bolton nearly stalled his nomination in committee circulated a letter on Tuesday urging colleagues to vote against Mr. Bolton when his name reaches the Senate floor, possibly this week.

The renewed opposition from the senator, George V. Voinovich, was addressed to all his colleagues, but it was aimed particularly at fellow Republicans in a chamber in which the party holds a 55-to-44 majority. At least five Republicans would have to join Mr. Voinovich in opposing Mr. Bolton's nomination as United Nations ambassador in order to defeat it.

In the letter, Mr. Voinovich said that while he had been "hesitant to push my views on my colleagues" during his six years in the Senate, he felt "compelled to share my deep concerns" about the nomination.

31. This is reminding me of Watergate

Seems like they are gaining in knowledge that our country is going to hell in a hand basket.

We need to keep encouraging them to test the waters of truth.
They knew the election was rigged.
They know that in order for them to be reelected they must do what their districts want them to do -- Stop the war, keep Social Security and stop the Christian right from taking over this country AND stop this fool BUSH.

Let's pray and redouble our efforts.

If the Democrats play this right this is sweet music!

Congressan Voinovich has lost 64 constituents in Bush's war of "last resort". Ten of them have died in this month alone.
