2 lawmakers try to halt new same-sex law
Christian Berthelsen, Chronicle Staff Writer

Two Republican legislators won the right on Friday to begin circulating petitions to overturn a law signed last month by Gov. Gray Davis that extends many benefits of marriage to same-sex domestic partners.

The secretary of state's office said Friday that the referendum backed by state Assemblyman Ray Haynes, R-Murietta (Riverside County), and state Sen. Pete Knight, R-Palmdale (Los Angeles County), had met with the necessary requirements to begin collecting signatures to place the issue on the ballot. If they are able to gather the 373,816 signatures necessary to qualify, it will probably appear on the general election ballot next November.

The referendum drew denunciations from prominent gay legislators, who said its supporters were trying to legislate morality and viewpoints that are out of touch with a majority of Californians.

... The referendum is one of many challenges conservative Republicans are undertaking outside the legislative process in an effort to undo governmental actions and decisions, since they currently lack the votes in the Legislature to stop things from passing.

2. I was just saying that to someone today ...
I am so fed up with the hate, anger and bigotry! What is wrong with these people anyway? Do they really think their lives are going to come crashing down if a gay couple has rights?

If gay and lesbian couples don't get the same legal rights and protections as I do, then they should not have to pay taxes because they are not being represented by their government. JMHO

4. The GOP doesn't only want to keep one group beneath them ...
They want to keep anyone who is not a rich, white, straight, Christian man beneath them!
