N.H., Maine senators upbeat about filibuster deal

By The Associated Press

Northern New England senators from both parties applauded a compromise that averted - at least for now - a showdown over filibusters to block some of President Bush’s judicial nominees.
Maine Republicans Susan Collins and Olympia Snowe were among a bipartisan group of 14 senators that brokered the last-minute deal, which set the stage for votes on three nominees as early as Tuesday.

In a statement, Collins said the agreement helps preserve the Senate’s "unique culture ... built upon a foundation of collegiality and cooperation that transcends partisanship."

"It is a culture in which legislative goals are reached with patience and perseverance, and through the art of negotiation and compromise," she said.

1. Maybe they are hoping to trade taking PORTSMOUTH off the BRAC
...in exchange for abandoning the Gang of 14.

That said, I'll bet Warner won't have trouble finding replacements. This 'leading from the center' business is gaining strong legs.

2. might have something to do with the fact that three military bases
in Maine, that provide mucho jobs in a state that does not have many jobs available, were on the Pentagon "list", just hovering menacingly over the heads of Snowe and Collins. Collins is not up for election, but Snowe is.
