Reports: Zarqawi Shot in Lung
By Ellen Knickmeyer
Washington Post Foreign Service
Thursday, May 26, 2005; Page A16

BAGHDAD, May 25 -- Insurgents said Wednesday in interviews and statements on the Internet that the leader of the group al Qaeda in Iraq, Abu Musab Zarqawi, was struggling with a gunshot wound to the lung. One of Zarqawi's commanders said the Jordanian guerrilla was receiving oxygen, heightening suspicion that the groundwork was being laid for an announcement of his replacement or death.

In the volatile western province of Anbar, meanwhile, U.S. Marines clashed with gunmen in their second major offensive there this month. A combined U.S. and Iraqi force of roughly 1,000 troops killed 10 insurgents as it began a sweep of Haditha, the U.S. military said. The offensive followed an increase in insurgent attacks on Marines posted at a dam near that small city, 125 miles northwest of Baghdad.

Among the 10 dead fighters was a man identified by residents as a Muslim cleric who was shot as he fired on troops with an AK-47 assault rifle, the U.S. military said in a statement.

On the second day of reporting about Zarqawi's condition, insurgents offered no tangible evidence that he had suffered a potentially fatal wound. Some of Zarqawi's rank-and-file fighters and one of his top lieutenants have said he was wounded in an ambush by U.S. Marines and Iraqi forces over the weekend around the western city of Ramadi. A U.S. military official, Lt. Col. David Lapan, said Wednesday that he had found no record of such an ambush.

4. Let me get this straight... Bushco is scared to death of a 60 year old
Saudi dragging a dialysis machine through the mountains of Pakistan and Afghanistan and a one legged, one armed Jordanian who's lung shot...

All this after a plane full of Saudis crash into the WTC...

So we attack Iraq?

Is Monty Python writing this script?

3. Reads like a John LeCarre' novel
First, maybe Zarqawi never actually existed....maybe he was a composite person created by misread intelligence reports.

Second, maybe, if Zarqawi does exist, the best way for him to take the heat off of himself is to die....or at least appear to die.

Third, what a better way to create a martyr than to have him die herocially in an American ambush? This works whether he exists or doesn't exist.....

God, I love a good spy intrigue...............

9. I was thinking
from the "other" side.....

of course, on "our" side it gets interesting too......

You can "kill" the enemy and declare victory, or,

you can keep the guy alive as a boogey-man for as long as you need to explain why the insurgency is still going....

in the northern No-Fly Zone so Bush'd have the case that Iraq was harboring terrorists

7. Great We Win ..... time to go home
Zarqawi dead or soon to be he was the "boogie man,"
So come on pack up your stuff troops and head home.

After all they have had free elections, good old Chalibi is in
charge of the oil, and they have at least 20 troops of their own
to keep anyone from the 103 different sides from fighting.

Mission Accomplished!

Next up from * & company.......
Bullshit on toast will now be "country style" apple butter.

12. LOL. Let me guess. This chapter was one of Frists?
IF a man had been shot in the lung--oxygen would be needed, but I wonder how he is running about the country with a portable oxygen tank and a chest tube with a pleurivac hanging off of it?
Sucking chest wounds are NOT cured by oxygen alone, lol.
This is getting good.

15. According to CNN - the gov't can now lie to Americans...*
* Sure, technically, one of the creators said it, but, in this new age of ignoring the details when informing the public - "CNN okay with lying to Americans!"

"...Rumsfeld, the Secretary can never lie but any, anybody under him can, that you have to do it when it's in the public, in the government interest."
Reese Schonfeld, Co-founder of CNN, Says "The Public Does Not Have a Right to Know"

"......The receptivity of the great masses is very limited, their intelligence is small, but their power of forgetting is enormous. In consequence of these facts, all effective propaganda must be limited to a very few points and must harp on these in slogans until the last member of the public understands what you want him to understand by your slogan...."

Mine was not a GSW, but a lung puncture from a bad jeep accident. I had a 90% deflate of my left lung. I spent a few days in the hospital with a tube in my chest. All happened in 1965.

He must have dozens of them, to match his legs.

On edit - If they are announcing 10 dead "insurgents" already, I predict some very grim news for the families of U.S. military personnel in Iraq over the next day or two.

20. One report claims that Zargawi left Iraq.
Somewhere here on LBN. Does the Bush Regime really believe that his dying or leaving Iraq will stop the insurgency?

I notice on the LSM that the Insurgency is being cast as only anti-Iraq Govt. when it seems plain to me that it is also very much anti- U.S. Occupation.

22. Catching Saddam Hussein didn't change anything.
Why would catching this guy have any effect? If he exists, he is probably a sideshow to the main resistance, which is bound to be primarily an expression of Iraqi nationalism. Same as the Viet Cong were primarily an expression of Viet Namese nationalism.

But, he makes a good bogeyman.

21. Newer piece: Mystery mounts over fate of terror mastermind al-Zarqawi
CAIRO, Egypt (AP) The Internet and Baghdad streets are teeming with statements about terror mastermind Abu Musab al-Zarqawi. One says he's being treated outside Iraq for gunshot wounds to the lung. Another calls on Muslims to pray for him, indicating his condition may be dire.

Only one thing is sure: none is confirmed.

The latest furor over al-Zarqawi began Tuesday when an Internet statement called on Muslims to pray for his life, followed by competing statements on his health and whereabouts.

The mystery deepened Wednesday after reports that two Arab doctors in another country were treating al-Zarqawi, chief of al-Qaida in Iraq and wanted for some of the deadliest attacks in the country.

--the groundwork was being laid for an announcement of his replacement or death.--

Time to bring in a new boogeyman who is also capable of regenerating legs, cutting off multiple heads, jumping out of taxi cabs, planning multiple attacks, and taunting Merka.

I think we get the point, 'insurgent' is only used six times those short paragraphs.

No one has even offered any evidence that he ever exists.

-- insurgents offered no tangible evidence that he had suffered a potentially fatal wound--

24. Iraqi Government Says Al-Zarqawi Wounded
(05-26) 07:13 PDT BAGHDAD, Iraq (AP) --

Iraq's most lethal insurgent group appears to be facing a leadership crisis amid conflicting reports about the fate of its leader, Abu Musab al-Zarqawi, and whether a Saudi militant has been named to stand in for him.

Iraq's interior and defense ministers said Thursday they have information that al-Zarqawi has been wounded — apparent confirmation of recent rumors that the Jordanian-born terrorist leader of al-Qaida in Iraq was injured. But the officials said they did not know how severe the injury might be.

Meanwhile, a host of sometimes-dueling statements posted by militants on Web sites made it clear there could be confusion within the group itself — or perhaps even a leadership struggle — over al-Zarqawi's status.

None of the statements could be independently verified, but many of them were posted on a Web site known as a clearinghouse for al-Zarqawi, thus increasing their chances of being credible.

just as Americans will NEVER run out of corrupt politicians.

So, BFD if he's wounded or not. If he dies, it will only make him a martyr for their cause. Is that supposed to be a good thing?
