NYT: Judicial Nominee Compromise Under GOP Pressure (Frist mocks deal)
Judicial Nominee Compromise Under G.O.P. Pressure
By DAVID D. KIRKPATRICK
Published: May 29, 2005

WASHINGTON, May 28 - Just days after a bipartisan group of senators agreed to defuse a standoff over judicial confirmations, Senator Bill Frist, the majority leader, found a new tool for interpreting their compromise: a Magic 8 Ball, the fortune-telling toy.

Mocking the agreement's provision that Democrats can block judicial nominees in "extraordinary circumstances," Dr. Frist suggested in a dinner speech on Wednesday that the Democratic leaders might gather around a Magic 8 Ball to decide how the phrase applied to each judicial nominee.

"Will Brett Cavanaugh get an up-or-down vote? The Magic 8 Ball says, 'Don't count on it,' " Dr. Frist said, pulling out the toy in a speech to the conservative group Gopac. "Will William Myers get an up-or-down vote? The Magic 8 Ball says, 'Better not tell you.' "

As senators headed home for a Memorial Day recess, the delicate compromise was under mounting pressure from Republican leaders and conservative groups who want to disarm the power of the Democratic minority to block votes on judicial nominees.

With the possibility of a Supreme Court vacancy when the court finishes its term at the end of next month, some conservative groups and members of the Republican caucus are pressing Dr. Frist to revive the fight over the confirmation rules as soon as he can by moving ahead with a vote on Mr. Myers....

2. Strokes the base and keeps the media away from the real news.
Who has time to worry about the Downing Street memo or anything else when we hear "all nuclear option, all the time" on every channel?

8. Thankyou. You're one of the few of us who fully understand
and comprehend this bad decision.

I for one am beginning to think that I wish they had gone with the nuclear option. The repuks will not waste a split second to use the fillibuster the next time a democratic president is back in power with a democratic congress.

If the fillibuster is gone due to the repukes actions, then we could pass national health care, gay rights and marriage rights, equal rights for women and a host of all other measures. There could be a big blessing if the repukes did this. Sure it would hurt on some issues for now - although I can't imagine what since we caved and GAVE them what they wanted WITHOUT A FIGHT - AGAIN.

10. I dare him to keep mocking.
Frist mocking one of the first examples of true bipartisanship since the GOP wrested control of Congress in 2000 shows his contempt for compromise and truly working for the American people.

I say, "Bill, keep mocking." And let the NYT and Post report on your hissing, Kitty Cat. Like Terri Schiavo, you're merely revealing the GOP's true colors: black, murky brown, and puse.
