US seems to condone Israel air raid into Syria (UN Sec Council)
No link - these are my notes from the BBC broadcast of about 8 minutes of the emergency meeting of the UN Sec Council. I caught most of the US statement; and a lot of the Arab League's statement:

Emerg meeting of the UN Sec Council:

Basically - attributes the suicide bombing yesterday as the work of Syrian terrorism. Israel's attack on Syria was justified and discussed his previous presentations to the Sec Council in 2002 when he warned them all that Syria is harboring terrorists. He intimated that the US would vote NO on any resolution to curtail Israel, as the US has done previously.

Arab Leaque - considers Israel's action a grave escalation and Israel shall suffer the consequences of its actions and calls on the UNSC to act. Israel's acts against Palestine, Syria and Lebanon are 'provacative' acts. The Syria attack confirms the aggressive nature of Israel and that Israel rejects any acts for the purpose of peace. Other proof is that Israel continues its act of settlement and annexation of terrorists. The Sec Coun should discharge its authority and should stop its double-standard of allowing Israel to act outside of the law. Israel has not implemented the entirety of the 37 resolutions that were passed by the sec council previously.

1. This may
get dicey. Especially if we veto a resolution chastizing Israel.
Anything yet on Syria's reaction.

4. Syria can't retaliate... I am more worried about how the arabs will feel.
...now that Syria is attacking sovereign arab nations at will and the arab world dares not do SQUAT because their leaders sold out and let the US go in and crush Iraq, a nation's whose military assistance would have been necessary for the arab world to respond militarily to Israeli aggression.

These comments are very interesting, E_Zapata, but it would be best if you post them within the existing LBN thread on this topic, which can be found here:

5. UN Council meets in urgent session on Syria attack
http://www.alertnet.org/thenews/newsdesk/N05312093.htm

UNITED NATIONS, Oct 5 (Reuters) - The U.N. Security Council met in emergency session on Sunday at the request of Syria, which asked the 15-member body to condemn Israel for attacking an alleged Palestinian training camp near Damascus.

Syria's U.N. ambassador, Fayssal Mekdad, who holds a seat on the Security Council, said council members would make public statements and afterward consider a resolution drafted by Syria that would "condemn strongly this brutal and unjustifiable attack" and urge Israel to desist from further attacks.

Mekdad, who said the Israeli raid had caused only material damage and claimed no lives, said Arab governments at the United Nations had joined Syria in sponsoring the draft resolution and in calling for the Sunday council meeting.
/snip/
Israel said it did not intend to pick a fight with Damascus but wanted the air strike to serve as a warning to stop Palestinian militant groups operating on Syrian territory, an accusation consistently denied by the Damascus government.
