Republican senator says US prisons best in the world
Republican senator says US prisons best in the world

WASHINGTON, June 5 (AFP) - Charges of prisoner abuse at Guantanamo or Abu Ghraib notwithstanding, a top US Republican senator on Sunday took pride in the US prison system, calling it the best managed in the world.

"It's very difficult to run a perfect prison anywhere, but the United States does that better than any other country in the world," Senate Republican Majority Whip Mitch McConnell said during his appearance on CNN's "Late Edition" program.

The senator was responding to charges by Amnesty International that since the beginning of the war on terror, the United States has created a system reminiscent of Soviet 'gulag' labor camps.

The United States runs the world largest prison system that houses more than 2.1 million inmates, according to the latest government statistics. That means that one in every 138 residents of the country is now behind bars.

1. I never could take this Pillsbury Dough boy. He is kidding. Right?
We sure can say that these few people we have put in prison at most likely millions of tax payers dollars has giving us a lot for our money, The whole world thinks we are nuts.It has got to be the best money the terrorist ever saw spent. They could not have done it with so few dollars or people, but Bush has done it for them. Thank God we did not need a Berlin Air Lift, with these people running us into the ground, you can bet they would have messed that up also,

very alarmed is one thing. Another thing is this perpetual "we have the best" thing. Compared to whom? Nigeria? China? Never do I read an actual comparison. IF I had to go to jail I'd damn well rather do it in Germany, France, the Netherlands. Certainly NOT in the US!

Just did a trip that included Devil's Island. The real Devil's Island where political prisoners went was connected to the main island by a overhead basket thing. The only "food" the ppl on Devils Island got were Water, Bread, and yes Wine... They had to grow and fish for any other food.....

49. American prisons are among the WORST in the industrialized world
Edited on Mon Jun-06-05 02:29 PM by Julius Civitatus
and international organizations (Human Rights Watch, Amnesty International) have been monitoring and harshly criticizing the US for many years for this problem. Where does this clown gets his info?It seems like most Americans are not aware of this fact, and live their lives unaware of the horrors taking place here. Among other things:

  1. The US has the largest percentage of its population in prison (2 million people) or through the justice system of all industrialized countries (except for Russia)

  2. The US has the least hygienic, most dangerous prisons of all industrialized nations (except for Russia)

  3. The US has the largest number of non-violent (drug-related) convicts imprisoned of all civilized nation (except for Russia). Non-violent convicts are usually thrown to the mix with highly violent, highly dangerous prisoners. The results are disastrous for society.

I guess our motto must be "hey! We are not as bad as Russia!"

If you have the guts or the stomach for it, read the Human Rights Watch report on the horrors of the American prison system:

http://www.hrw.org/reports/2001/prison/report.html

http://www.hrw.org/reports/2001/prison/voices.html

And here's a horrific report by UK's Channel 4 on the brutality of American prisons. Warning: it's very disturbing:

86. I'm starting to believe most Americans like to live in a bubble,
protected from reality, isolated from anything that may disrupt the false illusion that everything is fine, and we are the best of the best, and we can do no wrong.

The delusion of some folks is just astounding, and they can count on their political leaders to keep reinforcing the belief that their bubble is safe, and perfect, and clean.

McConnel has a comprehension problem or is erecting a strawman. Amnesty International were talking about Guantanamo not the domestic prison system, duh.

Of course, I'm sure Amnesty have something to say about a prison system that's run by private contractors and force cheap labour from the inmates for the benefit of other private corporations.

13. I think that it's true of federal prisons within the borders
Most state inmates want to get to federal prison, where there is better medical care and facilities in general, except in states with decent prisons, if there are any.

That's not talking about third world hellholes where our prisoners of this war are being held.

39. Torture Inc. America's Brutal Prisons (Shocking Must See Video)
Edited on Mon Jun-06-05 12:26 PM by downstairsparts
Savaged by dogs, Electrocuted With Cattle Prods, Burned By Toxic Chemicals, Does such barbaric abuse inside U.S. jails explain the horrors that were committed in Iraq?

They are just some of the victims of wholesale torture taking place inside the U.S. prison system that we uncovered during a four-month investigation for BBC Channel 4 . It’s terrible to watch some of the videos and realise that you’re not only seeing torture in action but, in the most extreme cases, you are witnessing young men dying.

http://informationclearinghouse.info/article8451.htm

(Originally aired on Channel 4 in UK March 2005. With link to video download. Essential viewing. A real eye opener, this one.)

Because there is a lot of truth to it. The Soviet Gulag featured:
- arrest without warrant or cause.
- no guarantee of trial or due process.
- hell-hole prisons in an out of the way geographic locations with extreme weather.
- abuse (torture), sometimes resulting in death.

Very much like like the Bush Gulag.

61. 'World's best Prisons'?: We have more prisoners than Russia or S. Africa
According to the International Centre for Prison Studies at King's College London, the U.S. currently has the largest documented prison population in the world, both in absolute and proportional terms. We've got roughly 2.03 million people behind bars, or 701 per 100,000 population. China has the second-largest number of prisoners (1.51 million, for a rate of 117 per 100,000), and Russia has the second-highest rate (606 per 100,000, for a total of 865,000).
South Africa, a longtime star performer on the list, has dropped to 15th place (402) since the dismantling of apartheid.

72. This weirdo thinks it's a summer camp
Ah yes. The American prison system. Kind of like Club Med without the pina-coladas. Hey what an economical place for a family vacation.

This weirdo lives in a fantasy world. He thinks prison is Disneyland.

pathetic if you ask me.

74. You can count on a closeted Republican to defend forcible sodomy.
But consensual sodomy? Heaven forbid (anyone find out).

77. What is it...
...about repukes arrogance at everything in America (including the country) being the best in the world?

No guys, this isn't a slam at the U.S. because regardless, I do love your country and admire those on the left who have put up with this shit since Bush* stole the election way back when.

83. I can't decide if this is more stupid or irrelevant.
I was under the impression that domestic US Prisons and overseas US military prisons are run by entirely different organizations. And we're talking about the latter. Right? Weren't we?

88. Building more prisons helps the poor. The rich can insulate
themselves from crime, by installing expensive alarm systems, living in exclusive neighborhoods and gated communities. High real estate prices are used as an invisible fence.

The poor have to count on the state to commit enough resources to aggressively enforce the law, and remove from their neighborhoods those who continually prey on them.

One reason crime rates have gone down in recent years is the fact that rates of incarceration have gone up.

90. She was trying to create an orderly classroom environment,
conducive to learning, for the sake of the other children in the classroom, selflessly disregarding the potential damage to her own career. She may have gone a little overboard.
