Hand-in-hand with her soon-to-be-imprisoned husband, Lea Fastow walked out of a downtown Houston prison before dawn today, then took a short ride to the downtown halfway house where she'll serve out the last five weeks of her one-year sentence for lying on her taxes about income from an Enron venture.

"It's been a tough year, but it's supposed to be a tough year,'' said Fastow, a stay-at-home mom before going to prison. "I am going home to my family soon. That's exactly what I'm looking forward to.''
With two young sons at home and her husband still awaiting sentencing for his starring role in the Enron scandal, Lea Fastow struck a plea bargain and began serving her sentence on July 12, 2004, on a misdemeanor charge of willfully delivering a joint 2000 income tax form to the Internal Revenue Service that she knew was partially fraudulent. A former assistant treasurer at Enron who left the company long before its troubles came to light, she admitted lying about ill-gotten income from an Enron side deal by disguising the money as gifts.

Lea Fastow was a prime candidate for a less restrictive minimum-security camp, but Judge Hittner refused to recommend the prison camp....
The judge's son is running for Houston City Council and there has been some controversy over a letter sent out by Lea Fastow's father supporting one of the other candidates.
